Some species of fungi have 36k biological sexes. I don't know how that would translate to genders in a developed fungal society, but it's fun to know.

Huh, that's really fascinating. Do you know any off hand?

To be honest I Googled "How many genders do fungi have?"

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/scient...19181.html

There were various other articles about more specific species with 10k sexes, often much fewer.

I always assumed that was the case... ?  Also, that means this is canon now.

As far as I'm concerned they're just characters in a game that serve no specific role other than being mushroom like people that happen to hang around the mushroom kingdom and tag alongside you, the player of the game to help you rescue The Princess.

They don't have to be ether girls or boys specifically. you can assume they're ether a guy or a girl depending on how you look at them. But in the end they're just open for interpretation depending on the player.

Personally, I just think all of them are asexual things that just talk like guys but act like girls.

So as someone who is Trans let me throw in my two cents

I really don't care.

I do not care what genders your characters may or may not be and to be honest it really doesn't matter unless it has to do with the storyline of whatever thing said character is in.

Sure if you wanna add a thing in the manual saying "this person is trans" or use only gender neutral pronouns with them in game or something, then that a cool piece of trivia, but it really doesn't matter. Anything that develops a character and develops them strongly and correctly I really like that, and honestly that shit doesn't have to be gender related at all.

This. This a lot.

Like, if a character is TG and transitioning, that's cool I guess and makes an interesting character for players to identify with - but I'm not really sure if that really affects the gameplay or the player outcome at all. From a good design point, it'd at most change the narrative.

In my inner DeviantArt tween fanfiction headcanon I like to believe that when Toad people get married and live in their mushroom houses for awhile, they develop allergic reactions to one another (like cooties) during the spring and begin to sneeze profusely. All this sneezing releasing spores into the air of their mushroom house. The spores then impregnate the roof of their homes, which then weeks later babies begin to fall from the ceiling (but only a few survive the fetal process so you don't have Toad overcrowding in the Mushroom Kingdom).

My headcanon is the best because it suits non-traditional marriages and nonbinary couples too ;3c

My headcanon alway had Yoshis as hermaphrodites like slugs. Yoshis are constantly laying eggs that are often unfertilized. How do these eggs get fertilized? I'm still working on that one. I'm trying to get the stork involved somehow.

As I see it, there isn't a need for most speciex in the Mushroom world to biologically procreate. Obviously some can, but in most cases I think a stork would bring the baby to their parents. The baby is either one which has been orphaned or one created by the star spirits to grant that specific wish. This is why inter-species relationships can work out for parentage, as well as why some individuals can have children without partners (such as Bowser, and perhaps even Kamek).

In all honesty, I thought the stork was more of a formality/luxury at some hospitals that specialize in birth. Sure, you can manually take the baby home, but what would you choose if the hospital gives you the option to have your newborn be delivered to your front door via a trained stork? I know it sounds dangerous, but how often do the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom practice their common sense?

it's ok to suck, sucking is not bad, just try and aim to always do your best!

Not to mention it's REALLY hard to die in the Marioverse. Even things that seem dead can come back to life. This is probably why no one worries that babies are riding go-karts upside-down.

I always liked the lives comic where mario goes down a warp pipe only to find where the game stores all his extra lives.
