You have to follow the colour wheel.
For example, as yellows get darker, they turn orange, then red, then purple.
Greens turn turquoise, then blue, then purple.

Yes, you essentially want to hueshift brighter shades warmer/up (towards yellow) and darker shades cooler/down (towards purple).
Of course, advanced artists can go against this and try playing around with different techniques and ignore this entirely if they know what they're doing and want to experiment, but for someone that's learning hue shifting, this is what you want to stick to.
