games you dislike that everyone likes and vice versa

My only complaints about Star Fox Adventures are how short it is and they could have done more if they kept some of Rare's original ideas intact, such as the switch stone concept. Other than that, it's a solid game that I want to see a remake or a kind of sequel to it.

Ditto. I liked the game well enough, but do feel like it could have been a lot more than what we ended up with. Especially if they had never slapped Starfox onto the project in the first place. It's just one of those situations that serves as an example of why Miyamoto shouldn't be treated as an end-all God-King in the decision making department.

No judging, but just out of curiosity, what are your opinions on the other 3D Mario games?

Games I like that others don't
  • Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword: the game definitely has its share of issues, but I seriously don't think it deserves as much contempt as it's gotten. The world may not have had as many regions to explore, but I feel that it was properly offset by how much bigger and how much more there was to explore in those regions.
  • Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin: Clashing graphics galore (probably the worst clashing in the series), but I still think that this was an enjoyable entry to the series. The two-character gimmick, whilst not used as often as it should, makes things interesting, and it's refreshing to go to worlds that aren't just the inside of the castle for once. Plus, three alternate playable scenarios aside from the main game gave this game some great replay (even if the touch-screen-centric Sisters mode did not accommodate lefties like me).
  • Super Mario Sunshine: fuck Blue Coins*, but otherwise this game kicked all kinds of tits. The control and freedom that FLUDD gave Mario was so satisfying for me (the camera was especially a huge improvement over SM64), plus I found it amazing how much variety Nintendo managed to inject into level designs despite the strict overarching tropical theme.
  • LoZ: Phantom Hourglass: I felt that the game did more "right" than Spirit Tracks. Overall better controls, better control (fuck double-tapping to roll), more fluid and free world exploration... the only shit thing was the Temple of the Ocean King, but I didn't think it was bad enough to make the game unplayable. It's not as terrible as, say, having to restart and retrace your steps from the very beginning after a Game Over in Zelda II.

Games I don't like that others do
  • Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance: The game has great controls (seriously, back AND forward dashing are a blessing to exploration) and the spellbook system is pretty awesome, but other than that this game tried way too hard to be Symphony of the Night 2: Electric Boogaloo, especially with the whole double-castle aspect and the corrupted ally plot device. Plus the music was so repetitive and grating to listen to; Circle of the Moon (this game's predecessor) really made great use of the GBA sound hardware, why couldn't this one have as well?
  • LoZ: Spirit Tracks: the aesthetics here were superior to Phantom Hourglass and the Tower of Spirits was less tedious (albeit more difficult than) the Temple of the Ocean King, but there's nary else I could say I enjoyed about this. Railroad traveling is so boring and repetitive (and annoying since it's prone to slowdown, particularly when Tanks show up), the plot isn't as engaging as Phantom Hourglass' (what especially bugged me was how the Lokomo Sword comes absolutely the fuck out of nowhere at the end), the dungeons didn't feel as brilliant as Phantom Hourglass' since hardly any new items were brought in (making the use of the items feel largely less clever and fresh), and those fucking Spirit Flute segments can go right back to hell. (Either DS/3DS mics really are trash or I've just had consistently bad luck with all of mine, as the only way I could effectively use the microphone for the Spirit Flute portions was to blow into a straw directly into the mic).
  • LoZ: Link's Awakening/DX: I don't care that it was the first portable Zelda. I still vastly prefer the Oracle games due to having far superior world/dungeon designs, more engaging stories, better music, and the sheer amount of content within both games.
*If I were designing Sunshine, I would've taken out 120 of the Blue Coins. With those 12 Shines, I'd use 11 to make another full level, and put the remaining Shine in a new secret one-off level.

I like Super Mario 64 and 64 DS, 3D World's nice, 3D Land and Sunshine are meh.
Still, none come close to the 2D games IMO. Speaking of which, I loved New Super Mario Bros. 2.

It might have just been you, I had to blow somewhat close to the mic but just so that it registers it (normal distance from what I can tell), and I actually enjoyed the Spirit Flute bits.

I highly preferred double-tapping and think it was a big improvement. More than 50% of the time I failed to successfully roll in PH, ST made it much easier for me. Although, you seldom actually have to roll in either of the games anyway so yeah.

(Not trying to start a debate or anything btw, it's fine that that's your opinion (that's what this topic is about anyway) but I just felt like commenting on those two bits.)

Big fan of Super Mario Sunshine. The world just felt so alive and I loved seeing all the people live their lives on the island.

I also thought Star Fox Adventures was pretty fun. Not to mention GORGEOUS!

Yoshi's Island DS was actually okay. It doesn't even come close to the original but it's not all bad. I just was in heaven seeing Mario, Peach, Donkey Kong, Wario, Yoshi all in the same game that isn't a Party, Kart, or Sport title. I want to see those characters appear together in more platform games.

Now here are some games that everyone seemed to like but I didn't.

Lego City Undercover. I found that game to be very annoying instead of funny. They also claim its a "sandbox game" but you can't do anything in it's world until you finish this or that.

Pokemon X & Y. I thought it was okay gameplaywise but thing thing that made me want to scream were the horrible characters and story. How did this franchise sink so low?

Super Mario RPG. Let me make this clear, I love this game, it's a classic. But is it as good as Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi? No way. But for some reason everyone seems to think that SMRPG is the best Mario RPG ever and puts all the others to shame. Hardly. Paper Mario/Mario & Luigi is funnier, has better characters (sorry Geno fans), and has better gameplay.

How was the story of X and Y bad? It had the darkest story out of any Pokemon game! I actually questioned how it was even a Pokemon game or an E-rated game.

Also, the franchise has not "sunk low" at all. I fucking hate it whenever people say that Pokemon "sucks now" and "needs to die". No. It doesn't.

You know what franchise has actually sunk low, and needs to die? Three words: Sonic the Hedgehog.

How it was an E-rated game? ...what?

The story of X and Y was pretty bad though. No lie Team Flare looked cool, but

Time to fight my friendly rival oh wait nope now I've got a crew to worry about that foots in a bunch of tropes
  • braniac
  • fat kid
  • girl
  • the only OK one is your opposite gender
  • why are all of my rivals so friendly where the hell is gary

Lysandre complains that the world is going to shit, and if things keep going on we'll have overcrowding, war, etc.
  • meanwhile Kalos is all these lavish nice plains and vast landscapes. overcrowding? on what? those lush mountains you'll still have tons of room for houses on?
  • There's diversity in the Pokemon world now. Gym leaders aren't the only people who are ethnically diverse (well, they weren't in BW either)
  • everyone you talk to mentions how much they love their pokemon
  • nothing is wrong
  • it's all in Lysandre's head

Lysandre's solution to this problem, rather than use Pokemon to help others, unearths a giant death ray to kill everyone on earth
  • Lysandre decides to solve these issues with genocide
  • man...what a dick
  • The ending plays out as if tragic; even though the whole time he meant well, but then became this crazy, power-hungry cartoon villain. the problem is that it ISN'T tragic. Lysandre is just a lunatic

Now, what if Lysandre won?
  • All that's left are his comedic-relief Team Flare grunts who are of absolutely no danger
  • 99% of the world is wiped out
  • He's a billionaire? Cool. I'm sure that'll really be helpful in a world where 99% has just been wiped out

Bottom line: Team Flare wasn't really treated with respect and didn't quite have the aspect of humanity that Team Plasma did in BW. Instead, they're just dopey cartoon villains.

Eh, Sonic doesn't need to die. He just needs to get his stuff together.

Speaking of which, I didn't think Heroes was too bad of a game. Repetitive character playthroughs and annoying enemy healthbars aside, I found playing as all of those characters pretty fun.

I really hate Earthbound.
A lot.
The whole series.

Also Super Metroid and Metroid Prime (all three of them) are terrible.

Mario Galaxy (both of them) is the worst of all the 3D Mario games.

Dark Souls to a degree.
I like the game, but god damn it's on way too high of a pedestal in my opinion. It's a decent game that is just too ridiculously hard at a lot of points, and I can only take the beating for so long.

Like it's my roommate's favorite game, he says it's perfect in all ways and all that jazz.... but he's never come close to even beating it... The farthest he's gotten is the boss fight where you're actually fighting two bosses at once and he just got annihilated every time he tried that and I'd watch him and just thought "That looks like no fun whatsoever.." and it never looked like he was having fun either. He's started the game about 10 different times now and it never lasts long until he drops it again, all the while praising it. And then it took me forever to beat the Gargoyles and once I did I felt awesome for a few seconds, and then remembered how many tries it took and how fucking frustrating the first boss fight alone was and it just isn't a very fun experience for me. I look at the time I've put into Dark Souls and the same amount of time I could put into another game, and I just have no desire to ever finish Dark Souls, despite all I hear about it and how it's the best thing since sliced bread.

Yeah Pokemon X & Y was trying to be "deep" but fails miserably. This is a problem with many JRPGs today. They end up being pretentious schlock. Seeing that tear drop from Lysandre made me palm my forehead so hard. Its just so cheesy. And that ending with that guy getting reunited with his Pokemon after hundreds of years? My eyes rolled so many times in my head that they popped out of my skull.

Sorry but the whole thing just ruined my experience. I'm just someone who plays a Pokemon game to explore a world, catch Pokemon, train, and battle.

I don't like Borderlands.

The concept is a pretty intriguing one... I'm talking gameplay here, the RPG/FPS mixture, but I don't feel like it's really something that works for me. I can understand why it might appeal to some people, but I honestly just never had any fun playing it.

I don't like Borderlands either.
I hated the art style from the moment I first saw it and didn't want to play it but I decided to try it because I liked the idea of a lootgame FPS.

Then I actually played it (on multiplayer, before anyone suggests it as the mode you need to play to have fun) and I hated every second of it. It tries too hard to be funny all the time (it isn't) and the guns and actual gameplay are all pretty boring. On top of that it has one of the strangest viewing angles I've ever seen and it's like the screen is stretched out incorrectly or something and it's the only game I've ever played in which looking at the screen makes me feel physically wrong. It's flat out disorienting to play.
