Besides (rarely) watching smash bros, I play Pokemon competitively, but I don't take it that seriously

I mostly try to pick Pokemon that I like, but I'm kind of bummed how few of them are actually viable and it feels like I'm playing with a handicap unless I make some compromises

I am excited to see how much wacky hijinks comes out of allowing custom moves for Smash Bros Wii U. Also looking forward to seeing Xrd's first appearance at EVO, as well as Ultimax, seeing as I play both of those. Tekken 7 will be interesting too, seeing as it's, you know, not available on consoles yet at all!

Though I'm definitely gonna miss King of Fighters XIII and Blazblue not being in the main lineup...

God tho, why the fuck is UMVC3 still there? Like... I thought it was dead at this point. Oh, aaand I couldn't care less about the rest!

Because it has a thriving community so strong that it's still played 15 years after it was released?

It's probably because they need MvC game, and MvC didn't have the type of revival Melee did (aka, the older version still being the popular after the new game turns out to be less competitively viable)

I don't think I'm going to get Tekken 7. Last Tekken I enjoyed was 5, last one I owned was 6 and they're cutting characters specifically in North America because of a NeoGaf thread.

Yo, that was a joke by Katsuhiro Harada, the producer/director, because people were being super friggin' whiny everywhere (especially at his twitter) regarding Lucky Chloe. He set his sarcasm powers to maximum overload but because it was text a lot of people took him seriously. We're still getting the character, no worries. I can understand just not liking the series anymore, I just wouldn't want your opinion to be soured by misinformation.

But like... seriously though... watch this in 60fps if you can. The game looks amazing.

Well, that's the thing though, I really wouldn't call MvC's community anywhere near "thriving", certainly not like Melee. From what I hear, it's been kind of stale the past few years (though I could be wrong?). I dunno, it just feels like it's taking up room that could be better filled by other games, especially in light of Blazblue being taken off the roster.

That's good to hear. I was really confused behind their reasoning on that one. It was bad enough when they killed off half the cast of Soul Caliber.

Yeah, blame the new director for that one. Well, they didn't really kill them off, just that there was a time gap and people got too old to fight or something (though it was definitely slanted against the female characters because I guess you can't sexualize them as easy, which is fucking gross)? I dunno, SCV was dumb in a lot of ways (which is why the SC community mainly just plays SCII HD) but I'll argue that at least some of the new characters are a lot more interesting than just "generic cocky anime man #1, 2 and 3". Patroklos and Pyrrha (fittingly voiced by Yuri Lowenthal and Laura Bailey) were obnoxious though so like... yeah. I want an SC game with SCII's balance and gameplay style but with the breadth of character choice from SCIV. And uh... take the SCV character creator and make it better, add more stuff.

But yeah, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was really good if you never played that. It was way more solid than 6 was, imo.

I was considering getting to it, but never really got around to it. My main issue with Soul V was that I mained Kilik, Sophitia, Seong Mi-Na, and Talim. Heck, Talim wasn't even out of her teens.

Oh... yeah that'll do it. I don't blame ya at all then. I really like Xiba though, as far as Kilik's playstyle went. And yeah, I miss Talim a lot too, it'd be neat to have her back but like, aged up and not just sort of "naive pacifist girl" and more of a like... I dunno, wise priestess kind of deal maybe? I mean she'd be what, 32 years old? It's probably 'cause the only reason they kept Talim around in the first place is because she fulfilled that "young cute innocent teen" trope.

How does this work considering the three different versions of the game? Is there an agreed upon version that's standard for competitive play? Are the guest characters simply not allowed to be utilized? What happens when a Link main is set against a Spawn main?
No clue about "official" standards (if any), but everyone on my campus who plays does the Gamecube version. Just as well, since I play Link.
Officially, Soul Calibur II's Arcade version is played in tournaments I think. If using the console version, I think the console exclusive characters like Link, Spawn, and Heihachi are banned.  I think Necrid is banned too???

I could have sworn I replied to this question before but I guess not! Huh. Maybe it was a different thread? Deja vu? Eaten post?

Anyway, that's not actually true now that Soul Calibur II HD exists. Well, actually, the bit about the arcade versions being used wasn't even true except for before the console versions were released. Soul Calibur II (and the rest of the series, actually) has had an interesting history with banning characters and you can read all the gritty details of that here. It's also a good read if you want a look into what it's like running/participating in a competitive gaming community!

For the short answer, though, currently the Soul Calibur community plays both SCV and SCIIHD. The issue of characters is solved by the fact that both Heihachi and Spawn are available in it. No Link but he was a bad low tier character and nobody liked him except massive scrubs. Necrid's hella broken tho, so like... yeah he's banned still. To be clear though, he's not banned because he's console exclusive, he's broken because he's console exclusive (no balance testing from arcade play) and THAT'S why he's banned. Hope that clears things up. Smile
