SUPER SMASH BROS. FEUD - BIG update in latest post.
#91
What's reassuring to me is that Nintendo's stance is seriously ticking people off. Maybe fans will finally give them the message.

Double post time

I've decided to hold off cancellation. I'm not entirely sure anymore if I really want to get rid of it. I've given it some serious thought and maybe I don't really want to cancel it so fast. This is THE one fangame I planned that I loved and cherished, and I was too quick and rash to move ahead with deletion.

I'm running a data recovery process that goes deep inside the confines of my drive (the deleted partition) in order to retrieve Feud's files. I don't necessarily want to continue it right away, but I at least want to salvage my assets just in case. And I also had other files hidden in there I wanted to use for Smash Wii U modding. Like a Xenoverse-styled King Cold custom I had edited.

There IS hope yet, everyone. At least, do me a favour:

If by some chance I do move ahead to finish and release it... please promise me, someone will keep it alive if anything happens.

I know I'm not very informed on the whole legal thing, but I think Nintendo's take-downs have something to do with how much the game is uhh... "Nintendo" or something. Like, compare Fullscreen Mario to Mari0(Mario/Portal crossover), both are remakes of the original Super Mario Bros. 1, they have a level editor, use graphics straight from the original game and were both very popular and known all around the internet. Fullscreen Mario got taken down, wheres Mari0's developers simply went on to do other things.

Here's what I think made the difference:

Warning: small wall-o-text!
tl;dr remix: Maybe material from other companies complicates legal actions for Nintendo, so if you wanted to continue the project, maybe you should add a lot of crossover stuff?

Well, I read all of your wall of text.

I guess Feud COULD continue, POSSIBLY. I may be reusing assets and music from, SSBB, SSB Wii U, Melee, etc.. But it's a completely unrelated new game and not a remake. It's my own vision of how a Smash game could be, with somewhat my dream roster without being too outlandish (with stuff from DBZ, for example), and characters that would probably never make it into a Sakurai Smash.

Feud has Nintendo characters, and some from third parties. Even one single indie fighter completely unrelated I included as a WTF surprise character.

I think I understand Uranium now. It's because of Sun and Moon coming. AM2R... IDK. Maybe it's Federation Forced-Down-Ur-Throat. XP

We shall see how things end.

I think if this does get near completion, Just try and release it when a new SSB game is not upcoming or just released and I think it should go fine. That and I would REALLY like to work on a Smash fangame myself and at least add one character I always wanted... There aren't any good engines to start besides MUGEN and even that is not exactly Smash Bros.

I've decided to keep at it. Heart There's one person who thinks I shouldn't, but meh.

And thanks, SuperMario. Smile I'll just pray I finish this before a new Smash is out.

MUGEN? It's a traditional engine. XP

what's so not friendly about a cute dancing girl? :C

[on-topic]

There are a few MUGEN-powered games that were cleverly given a less-traditional system, like the discontinued Card Sagas Wars (basically a fantasy Smash roster as you described). tho i haven't had any experiences myself, making a unique system in MUGEN can be done through breaking into the base engine and changing around code. there's also Fighter Maker which pretty much allows you to start from scratch and build whatever action-oriented game you want (mostly arcade-style beat-em-ups and vs fighters, but i'm sure there's room to expand).

I never really got into MUGEN or Fighter Maker. Found them very user unfriendly. Sad Maybe I did something wrong. XP

Here we go again with this orgy of crap... Nintendo issued DMCAs on > *500* fangames on this one site. FIVE HUNDRED. Off a site called Game Jolt.

Nintendo really hates fangames.

I really want to continue. But at the same time, a legal notice can't be good for someone trying to make indie games on his own. I'm starting to think focusing on my original material was a good idea.

I don't know...

On one hand I have 3 votes (I don't count mine) for continue and 2 for stop. I'm on the fence here.

ARGH GOSH, WHAT TO DO??

I vote for letting it die. You're new to game development and programming while trying to make a fast paced fighting game with a similar amount of content than smash bros. Did you already figure out how attacks work, moveset scripting, how attack collisions work, knockback, menus, customization, physics, animation, ... etc (Hint. I doubt you can use Unity's built in physics system since smash doesn't use realistic physics or collision response.) Are you good at vector math, including matrices? Are you familiar with spaces? If not, you're going to have a tough time placing objects relative to other objects (weapons, fighting collision bubbles like offensive, defensive, reflect, hurt, etc). Further, you are alone. I think you should slow down a bit and make a smaller game where there's a lot less unknowns to figure out.

Downloading ROM data of classic games is a very VERY gray area (for some reason). I'm guessing since Nintendo's coming out with that plug n' play NES console that they'll crack down on various emulation sites.

But that sucks. This whole lawsuit thing has to be part of some troll's menacing scheme to ridicule Nintendo fans who pay tribute to their favorite franchises. For whatever reason I can't imagine the executives working at Nintendo being that selfish (since they're obviously not lawyers). Whoever's doing this is no different from the playground bully who takes your drawing of Mario and rips it into pieces for their own enjoyment.

I think that's an order of a line manager. Because there are a risk to allow persons to have their game assets, not for the utilisation, the assets extraction can be problematic for the game publishing security.

Okay. I have my true, absolute final decision made.

Feud is going to die. Truth of the matter is, ShyGuy is right. Just because I did moveset mods in Brawl doesn't mean I can make a whole game by myself.

Feud will live on MAYBE as a SSB for Wii U mod pack.

I'm setting myself up for disappointment, failure and frustration right out of the box. And that's not a good thing to do as a new game developer.

I was gung-ho and enthusiastic but that doesn't guarantee anything.

I'm sorry for going backward and forward like this. But I'm pulling the plug for real. Sorry for the disappointment.

Will a mod please lock this topic?

I'm sorry to disappoint, Chris, but it won't. Ever.

There's a ton of legal and other issues should I continue this. I really wanted to, but it's just not feasible.

Nintendo is stubborn, so i can't imagine their DMCA lawyers backing off anytime soon.

wish you luck with whatever new things you'll be working on! Kyun Kyun Aidoru
