What about stuff like Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone (and other DBZ movies)? That isn't really standalone (I'm pretty sure it doesn't newly introduce the characters), it has a place in the anime's timeline and is even referenced in later episodes. Still counts as a movie though.

I think in that case, since it's a self-contained arc (or in DBZ's case, "saga") it would count as a movie...

Of course this brings up the case of things like Mockingjay, which was split into two parts. Is each individual part a movie, or is it one huge movie with an intermission?

I feel like the DBZ movies can still function without any prior knowledge, which I'd argue makes them stand-alone. The characters don't need to be properly introduced as long as they carry out the main plot until it comes to some kind of conclusion. And if I remember correctly, nothing is fully dependent on info from the anime, only the plot points that are often unique to the movie itself.

I guess I'd say that's sort of a gray area. Okay I've decided that anime movies don't count anymore. Anime movies will now be called "Special Episodes".

dragon ball movies to me are like an alternate universe - they're either reiterations of what's happening in the TV series or completely different stories altogether. that's pretty much what the two recent movies are, because Super basically retold what happened in a TV anime fashion.

what collides with my theory is the fact that characters in the movies often retain memories of what happened in the TV anime >.>

whoop. just got out of TMNT Out of the Shadows. It's everything the first movie should've been.


Oh, it's kinda dumbed down for younger audiences but has like WAY too many jokes for older fans (there's...a giant Dating Game reference, wtf) and Bebop and Rocksteady literally make the film.
You know how Heath Ledger basically made the Dark Knight amazing, because of his superb acting? Yeah they COMPLETELY kill it but instead of spooky, it's goofy onscreen bromance. It's like they took the characters from the TV show and made them absolutely dopey-great.

If you're thinking of seeing it, just go see it. It's a great turn-your-brain-off, bassy-explosions popcorn summer film. If you're a fan of the Turtles (i'm talkin to you, dolphman) you're going to LOVE it. If you're a more casual Turtles fan, you might find yourself a little lost but if you've watched a little of the 1980's cartoon you should have a decent grasp of why things are this or why this guy says that etc. etc. The easter eggs are aimed at more casual fans ("I liked the Turtles as a kid") Very few comic book series references, if at all. I don't think there...were

And if you wanna wait till it's out on Blu-ray...uh,

Saw it today. And yeah, I thought it was better than the first movie as well. The cinema I was in had a large crowd too, so that was good.

Gotta agree Bebop and Rocksteady were one of the best things about it, as they are more fleshed out than their original counterparts.
I didn't mind the fart joke though, as it does fit with how they're big dirty slobs, and having feral yet fun-loving attitudes.
For one thing, I thought Brad Garret was an odd choice for Krang, because the voice he gives him reminded me of Goldar from Power Rangers.
If you ask me, Charlie Adler or Steven Blum could've been more appropriate choices as their Starscream voices definitely fit Krang.
With Tyler Perry as Baxter Stockman. I was a bit unsure about him at first due to his Madea movies. But his goofy mad scientist performance works since Baxter has always been a jolly and goofy mad scientist. I really hope they go with him becoming the main villain for the next one.
So does Perry as he really wants to become Fly Baxter. That way we might get the Mousers too.
Casey Jones was okay, but I wish he did more hockey vigilante stuff. And I'm on the fence that say he needs long hair.

Most were upset Shredder didn't do much, but come on. He'd get old pretty quick if he returned all the time, ala Team Rocket or 1987 Shredder.
People have wanted Krang in a movie for ages. And boy, does he finally get the time to shine during his appearances.
Heck, I wouldn't mind if they adapted the famous space story arc from the comics. Live action Fugitoid and Triceratons would be awesome.

So overall, I really enjoyed it.

Things I liked from the movie, so spoilers ahead

1) When Shredder is sent to Krang's trophy room, you can see the tank next to his contains a Triceraton.
2) The Turtles giving Vernon shit due to him having too much fun with getting credit for defeating Shredder.
3) Raphael kissing the ground after making it to land after the river, only to see a tortoise in front of him giving him a glare.
4) The Technodrome having the huge eye on top. Eat that, Nickelodeon incarnation!
5) We got a lot more focus on the turtles. That shows the producers have been listening to fan feedback and suggestions.
6) The Bumblebee cosplayer meeting Michelangelo. He even came out of car form with the transformation sound effect.
7) Bebop and Rocksteady were so freaking enjoyable. Kudos to Gary Anthony Williams and Sheamus' performances.
8) Kevin Eastman's cameo as the pizza delivery guy. Many will miss this one, though.
9) I found it amusing how the Donatello's equipment and their truck feature the "Heroes in a Half-Shell" bit from the theme song.
10) The cover of the theme song during the closing credits. Now that's fanservice.

It's one of those old cheesy actiony martial arts movies, but it was pretty damn enjoyable.

Just got back from seeing Warcraft: The Beginning. Pretty darn good in my opinion. The story was great, I'm really glad that they kept it so true to the games. The effects and everything was great as well, I loved the magic and the orcs fighting was really awesome too. Honestly, I'd recommend it even if you haven't touched a Blizzard game in your life.

It was a bit hard to follow exactly what was going on at times and I didn't manage to keep track of everybody's names, but that just means that I have a good reason to watch it again. And also because it was just awesome, of course

EDIT: Been thinking about it a bit more, to be honest if you care about story it probably isn't for people who don't care about Warcraft lore (especially since this is the story from like, the first game). It doesn't really explain a lot of things too well and the plot probably won't be interesting (or make any sense). However if you're in it for the visuals and action I still think you can enjoy it.

Watched District 9 on TV today. Pretty hectic movie with some of the best arthropod alien designs I've seen in live-action.
The mech suit near the end was cool too. It had a very stop-motion animation look to it, which I liked.

Kinda funny how the production team includes the same people who were working on the sadly cancelled Halo movie.
At least we did get that mini-series, which is the closest we'll get. Gotta love Weta's Warthog prop, though.

Been watching quite a lot of stuff lately. Watched the new Turtles film (because apparently I hate myself) - yeah, don't watch that.

Also watched Secretary - which I was told was a romantic comedy. I even read reviews that said it was funny. That film, is not a romantic comedy. At all. The subject matter is a bit off the beaten track but it's an enjoyable enough film until her final 'challenge' - which is just stupid. Like I have experience in the whole sub/dom sexual thing and the whole point of it is trust. It's a give and take, even if it doesn't seem like it. Nobody would

stand with their hands on a desk for freaking days on end

for someone who they don't have a very strong relationship with, and even then it would be extreme. Just jumps the shark.

ALSO - even though I know that 50 Shades of Grey started off as erotic Twilight fan-fiction, it completely rips this film off (and thus the book the film is based off). Like, it's the SAME plot. The guy, is even called Grey. Like what the hell. How did this not make millions and millions and yet 50 Shades prints money like no tomorrow?

Right, anyway, moving on. Re-watched Princess Mononoke (got in a Ghibli mood after being surprised with Kiki's Delivery Service in cinema on my birthday, sitting there not knowing what film is about to come on is a really odd feeling...) - such a good film. Even the girlfriend liked it, and it's hard to gauge if she'll enjoy these things (she didn't like Nausicaä at all, which is like one of my favourite films of all time).

Watched Carlito's Way a while back (girlfriend was annoyed after it finished because I guessed the ending, like - to the dot) which is an excellent film, on par with GoodFellas.

Conjuring 2 - I ruined the film for myself I guess. Because I know about poltergeist (which I'm assuming a lot of people do thanks to the film: Poltergeist). I first thought the film was just stupid because it got things wrong, but that turned out to be the plot twist. So, pretty dumb. I mean if I didn't know it was a poltergeist then the film would have worked. But as the word poltergeist is in the title, well it kinda shoots itself in the foot.

Not sure if I've mentioned it before but man, The Witch is a weird weird film. Like I have no idea if it's good or bad, if I'd recommend it or what. Like it's a film that defies being judged. Very weird film.

Talking of weird films - Kill List. Don't Google it, you'll ruin it. Starts off pretty standard, good film and then BAM. Everything goes nuts. One of the most memorable endings I've seen in a film even if I'm not 100% what the hell I just watched.

Today I went and seen The BFG with my sister in-law. We both enjoyed it and was glad that the cinema we were in was packed.
Sucks that it flopped in America, and it didn't help how it came out a week after Finding Dory which I also enjoyed.

But Spielberg has always had a bitter relationship with Disney, and their meddling with this film won't help either.
Who knows if he'll let someone else direct the next Indiana Jones since he is involved with that as well.

I did like the weird proportions the giants had in the film, though. Looks more inhuman that way, and is much better than bigger humans.
Same reason why I prefer Ray Harryhausen's cyclops designs from 7th Voyage of Sinbad. (Scales, goat legs, three fingered hands, and horns)

Watched Secret Life of Pets today with my best friend

Was alright, kinda debate if it's possible to re-watch.
Suffers a bit from the same problem Angry Birds had of going through a lot of the good stuff in the trailers, however I'd say there's still some funny stuff left, and they didn't over-do/over-repeat jokes, either.

I'd recommend watching it if you're interested
