#1
there was a sprite/pixel art only/tailored towards image hosting site
P I X E L Z E N
and in japanese Pikuseru zendō which means "the entire nation of Pixels"

and literally just have so clean and simple
push browse, select file, then have the image simply appear on the bottom.
no gallery view, no seeing what everyone else has posted, just like literally, i need to upload a sprite. done.
and the urls simple like pxlzen.net/123213

OK now that the hype is out my system does this sound remotely doable worth it to anyone[Image: IWsZmIv.png]

I have no idea what you mean but it sounds like you just want an image hosting site...

That's exactly what's being described and it's something we won't be providing as maintaining it would be a nightmare. First, there's bandwidth and storage requirements which would be way too expensive to keep up if the site were to get popular but there's another hurdle we'll hit first - how do we limit it to being used for just pixel art? The idea certainly isn't a bad one but it's not really feasible unfortunately.

Is he talking about implementing that into the site? I figured he just meant like, one being made that would be super convenient to use.

I know where this was posted, but it doesn't necessarily sound like a suggestion specifically for VGR so to say??

I took that to mean he wanted us to make it, not necessarily to integrate it into VGR/tSR/etc. though. I love the idea of a truly simple, ad-free, comment-free, album-free, other-annoying-thing-free image hosting site but it's not something we could feasibly provide.

There are some temporary image hosts that are like this. With a quick Google search I found five or six on the first page. You can set times ranging from one minute to one month, and most default to thirty minutes. One also has a "Forever" option, if you really need it.

I'm not saying to add this, or even attempt it, cuz as you said, Petie, it'd be a nightmare to set-up, but the only way to ensure it's used for pixel art would be to go and add tags to sheets or entire games, labeling them as either pixel-art or not. And making sure every sprite, or even, texture submitted thus far is tagged appropriately means another community project similar to the icon renovation. It also adds yet another thing for the submission staff to monitor. It's possible to restrict its use to pixel art, but that'd be a pain to initially set-up, and keep in-check.

I like the idea, but I agree it's not worth the trouble trying to implement it.

1) yes for VGR

2)32 color limit and 100X100 size limit
3) I would admit the shit out of it and make extra clear on the site its for sprites only.

I'll set it up with bandwith shit and everything and maybe vgr can just link me in a button? we'll see once i get the site up but yeah if i did manage to set up a simple clean sprite hosting website, would you guys consider using it is all im really asking.

We were contacted a few weeks ago by somebody with a similar concept, but without the user input. We're already going ahead with supporting his idea - the result is likely going to be pretty different from your vision but perhaps you should wait to see what that result is? I'd imagine his site will be ready fairly soon.

Oh, so you're saying you wanted to make it? The way I read it originally, it sounded like you were suggesting it as an add-on site for us.

That saiid, your requirements for #2 wouldn't work for us. People are uploading entire sheets, not just individual sprites and many of them use more than 32 colors (the default gif pallet is 256, after all).

uh, um

I think what Dazz is hinting at is COMPLETELY different. That idea, while I don't want to give away too much (???) is more like "one guy uploads".

I like Des' idea, but I'm not sure how much Petie is really feeling it from the vibe of this topic. I don't like putting words in anyone's mouth but from Petie's perspective an image-hosting site would be a nightmare in terms of server costs and upkeep. But maybe I can sweeten the deal, because I get the idea, and would probably make a fun challenge...except I doubt neither Des nor I have the PHP/SQL know-how to make such a thing happen:

- upload just one image at a time
- gif only
- image width/height max of 256x256 px?
- filesize limit is very, VERY small. like 2~4 kb (that'd be a good roundabout way to ensure it has a low color index, since coding it to recognize the amount of colors feels like you'd have to literally invent a google-sized algorithm)

The only downside of course is like - sure, the time it'd take to write something like that, but if people were to hotlink those images OUTSIDE of VGR, would it have a harmful effect on the server? I mean, if it's only calling 2kb of traffic at max per image, then it wouldn't like obliterate the VGR servers, would it? Or would it possibly harm monthly bandwidth or something? I'd assume hotlinking spritesheets would actually hurt the site more...
Within VGR limits (like no hotlinking allowed) it seems like it'd be too much work for so little reward. Blank But if other pixelart/spriting communities began using it and put their two cents in on it we might have a killer app in the works here.

I mean, you could make a wall of 50000 tiny Sonic sprites and they'd add up to 100MB, but what are the odds that like somebody's actually going to do that to exploit the service lmao

Those of you that are curious, that site seems to be active now. It's been going for only 2 days but looks like it'll be pretty interesting:
http://dlypxl.com/

Their Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr look interesting as well, as they seem to be putting actual backgrounds with them... Though that first one with Link is a bit weird.

I like the idea behind this new site. I wanted to stay relatively mum about it.

Are they an affiliate? Because for some wild reason I really, really wanna make a forum theme dedicated to them. i'm just feelin the absolute hell out of their aesthetic on social media Heart

Not officially an affiliate (yet?) but there is some mutual respect going on. We're promoting them as they're linking back to us.

Edit:
Also, more on topic, this site is obviously very different than the one proposed here. While I still don't feel that it would be feasible to make the originally proposed site, that doesn't mean the conversation regarding it has to stop completely.
