Oh man and I just got to 40... my dream of getting a rep of 69 and laughing stupidly to myself was just never meant to be...

Well, there's still time.
Should we help Goemar out here? Thanked by: miyabi95_

Just know someone is going to make it 70 and then the system will go and that person will laugh and laugh and laugh...

I liked rep. It was nice to see the number rise a little bit, and see a kind comment about something I've done or said. It also felt like a simple and direct way to show appreciation to somebody else.
That said, I'm not sad about it going. I can see how low numbers might make people feel inferior (or vice-versa, high numbers making them feel superior), or high numbers intimidate new members. I also felt like negative rep could really discourage people and often wasn't very constructive. Personally I've never given any negative rep, only positive and occasionally neutral. I usually don't pay close attention to reps myself, but at the same time, I'd rather avoid being a total egotist about them.

Reps are good for their purpose...Just basic ratings of a user based on the opinions of other users. So that leaves open the possibility of some users being assholes and abusing the system, so in a way it's a given. (not saying that it's a good thing though. it's like people who dislike youTube videos, don't they have anything better to do?)
am i sad to see it go? nah, not really. Thanked by:

Youtube is open to the public which includes all sorts of people. This community is now somewhat small and can get cliquey.

Youtube also arguably has lazy mods/admins, or they're under some company policy to do nothing productive.
There are comments that amount to harassment, hate speech, and bullying. These should be removed, and the people posting them should be given a warning, or even have the cops sent to their house. I've reported some absolutely unacceptable comments on that site, and it's clear youtube's staff or whoever/whatever is in charge of dealing with it simply have no desire/ability to. Compared to youtube, this community is usually ok, usually... I do feel that quite a few people could still work on some things, but aside from a select few threads, I don't see flame wars going on here nearly as often as they do on youtube. For the most part, racism and similar things don't seem to be nearly as prominent here as youtube's comment section. I'm sure everyone here can share multiple stories of nightmarish comment chains they've witnessed or participated in. The rep system here does tend to be abused, though. It'll be sad all the funny or constructive up-reps have to go, but at the same time, those down-reps...some are just awful. Another question, though, why did the myBB team decide to remove them? Is it similar issues to what's happened here? Or is there another, perhaps not even serious reason? (only cuz software devs do have a tendency to add and remove stuff for all the wrong reasons)

Quote:Compared to youtube, this community is usually ok, usually...I mean, I think pretty much any community is better thanYouTube's community. YouTube comment sections are not exactly places for thoughtful discussion. On topic, however, I don't really mind the concept of rep, but I won't miss it going. half the neg reps I've seen are entirely pointless and basically unwarranted (I could post a few examples but I don't think I need to), so there's that. The big problem with YouTube is that it's SO BIG that it's functionally impossible to moderate it completely. I'm surprised they do as well as they do.

Maybe just me, but the only form of 'moderation' i see on that site is the contentID system, and that's bullshit
Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see any indications that anyone is doing anything to keep that site's community in check. Please provide some actual examples? Also, why are we continuing the youtube discussion in this thread? I surely hope I haven't permanently de-railed it...

I just saw this and my reply is obviously a little late but I might as well say it anyway. The rep system is built into the current version of the software and is being removed from 2.0. My reference to us not removing it is included because even in the current version, the system can be entirely disabled which isn't what we're doing come 2.0 - it's actually being taken out by the developers.
