There isn't tbh.
I'd definitely play in a level called new dank city.

So is this the first mainline Mario that references Donkey Kong Country?

I guess it depends on what you consider mainline ... there's probably references in there somewhere. It's definitely been referenced in Mario Party, Kart, RPGs, and sports titles though.
Unrelated, did anyone else see Mario running through realistic city and jungle environments and instantly think of the Sonic Adventure games? I can't be the only one, right? Thanked by: miyabi95_, Kriven, psychospacecow

When the trailer first showed up I expected a flood of water to come out of the manhole like in Sonic Adventure if that counts lol.

I almost let the idea of "Mario & Sonic Adventure" creep into my head.
Almost.

Actually, the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the jungle area after the city was Pikmin, and for a split second I thought this might be a Mario game that crossed over into other Nintendo worlds.
But then I couldn't make that connection with any other stage they showed, so... Maybe we'll at least just get a Donkey Kong cameo in New Donk City? Thanked by: miyabi95_

Mario Kingdom Hearts would be pretty great.

When it first showed the manhole. I thought it was Ninja Turtles. As for the humans and New Donk City. I pictured it more of a Who Framed Roger Rabbit kind of interaction. Tons of Donkey Kong Country references. "Diddy Market", "Dixie Street".
K. Rool, Cranky, and even Expresso get referenced in the street names. |
