Mobile gaming isn't in out community seen as "real gaming", but i digress, to a certain extent
yeah, shovelware is REALLY common, but there are even there we have some golden nuggets.
Here's a few, that i love
DAMNAKU DEATH
android exclusive, it's a bullet hell that focuses on killing a boss in the shortest time possbile, it also have an "attacking shield", kina like touhou mointain of faith, and a global leaderboard. Check it out

ARCAEA
Do you like music games? Than you'll like this one a lot.
It's really similar to Sound voltex: 4 keys+a long press that foces you to go left or rith with the finger

SINOaLICE
this one is a RPG made by policelabo and distributed by square enix, from the same guy behind Nier and the Darkegard series. Japanese exclusive, but with a really interesting and dark story: In a world called Library filled with countless stories, the Characters within each story wish to revive their author for their desired future. To do so, they work together to gather inochi and fight the Nightmares that devour stories, knowing they will inevitably have to kill each other to get their wish.

FATE:GRAND ORDER
if you like the fate series you probably know this one, it's another rpg game in a parallel universe of the original novel/anime, and recently released in english for US devices: In 2015 (2017 in the US version), the final era where sorcery still exists, the Chaldea Security Organization, its numerous projects having guaranteed humanity's existence through to the next century, discovers that the future they have observed no longer exists, and calculates that humanity will now go extinct in 2016 (2018 in the US version). It traces the cause of this event to an anomaly that has appeared in 2004 in Fuyuki City. To avert the extinction of mankind, Chaldea decides to use its sixth experiment, time travel, converting its agents into spirit particles and sending them through time to destroy the space-time anomalies that will cause humanity's extinction. The name of this mission: "Grand Order", the name for those who would rise up against human history for the sake of humans, and fight fate itself.
The gameplay is really atipical: every charater can attack with 3 different cards: Quick Arts and Buster, and you must use them as effeciently as possible

two favorites right now are Arena Masters and WIND runner. they are good games that are FREE but don't slap any limits on play time. also Arena Masters literally just gives you really cool stuff from the get go so you don't have to waste cash on the app store.

best mobile game ever bought would have to be Deathsmiles.

I really wish I could nominate Magikarp Jump, but that's really nothing more than a Skinner's box for Magikarp fanboys. Mind you it's the only game I've actually put a significant hours into on my phone.

Kero Blaster (Pink Hour and Pink Heaven are free 'demo-like' games for it if you want to try before you buy).

The only mobile game I've put significant time into was plague inc., and that's because its a waiting simulator. Fun wiping out all of humanity though.

Cook, Serve, Delicious! has been taking up a lot of my time lately, it's the perfect game to play on the train to or from town. Super Hexagon is also a favourite that's never gotten boring.

In terms of free games, Jrump and Alto's Adventure are both ones I would recommend checking out.

Not going to lie, I've put far too much free time into Bloons Tower Defense 5. It gets a little repetitive and grindy at times, but its ridiculously fun and addictive. So is Downwell... You also can't go wrong with arguably the best versions of Sonic 1, 2, and CD or the remake of the DS classic, The World Ends With You. Although that one is a bit pricy for a phone game (I still think its worth the price).

Though, I mostly just use my phone as an emulation machine =/.

The only mobile game I play at all is Flappy Bird. It feels so much like an arcade classic to me.

Honestly I'm still enjoying Love Live School Idol Festival and Pokemon Go.
I'm also currently enjoying FE Heroes and the New Futurama game.

Steven Universe: Attack the Light. Amazing turn-based RPG inspired by Paper Mario with level art inspired by Yoshi's Island:
