Thought about an Obamacare joke for this thread, but in the end, you just got the game title.

Anyway, here is Randi with all of his weaponless sprites
[Image: fNYRGYK.png]
Most of his sprites are centered around specific weapons and I have to find out which ones.

The editor for this is called Somedit:
https://somedit.blogspot.com
Current build is 0213 and I doubt that we will see an upgraded version. All main characters, enemies and NPCs are viewable plus their tiles. Same goes for maps.

I searched for an alternative in terms of ripping because emulators apparently have serious problems with ingame artefacts:
Deleted a few colours from the floor palette to make the miscolourings visible. The carpet also has a strain full of artefacts. Right one is hard-ripped (by Tropicon from vgmaps), left one is Somedit. The map here is Tasnica with its interior, 131 vs 158 colours for the whole thing.

Pretty sure some of the other SoM maps on the site are screwed up too (counting colours and deleting a few colours from wide areas will make it clear), but at the moment I want to focus on the main characters and interior maps of towns and probably castles too.

Edit: Turns out Somedit has problems too, but they are mostly clearly visible (obviously miscoloured tiles) and not hidden like these artefacts.

Edit2: copy in case I need it again: "Ohmygod, Joe, no...stop..."

Looking good. Is there a tutorial on how to use this for sprite/background ripping? Looks like I could use this to finally complete my sheet for the waterfalls in this game.

No problem here is a quick tutorial + some extra infos, since Somedit has its quirks and is far from perfect. The vast majority of the maps is displayed without any issues, though.

- Download somedit0213.RAR from https://somedit.blogspot.com/
- Open someditc.EXE
- Upper task bar - File - New Project
- Select your Secret of Mana.SMC or Secret of Mana.SFC file
- Another window opens, give your project a name, like testgame.SOM and save it
- Upper task bar - File - Open Project - Select testgame.SOM
- Go to Data Categories (the tree on the left of your somedit window) - Map Data - Composite Maps
- Choose your map by switching through them (the panel for this is below the actual map display in somedit)
- Above the displayed map, uncheck the following: Objects, Triggers, Piece Borders, Collisions (this will clear all markings on the map)
- Upper task bar - Map - Export Map - PNG

01)
There are some special cases like map 150 (Lofty Mountains), which uses a background panorama. This one shouldn't be on the actual rip, since it changes its position by scrolling. Uncheck Layer 2 BG to only rip the map and uncheck Layer 1 BG to only rip the parallax background.

02)
Another special case are the Pandora Ruins of map 162-164. Uncheck Layer 1 BG and Layer 1 FG to get rid of the overlay fog effect. Map 401-405 and map 408 (Northtown Ruins) have the same effect.

03)
In some cases, Somedit displays obvious errors. Like on map 176, the intro scene with the mana fortress. The parallax background is not visible in this scene, but still there in Somedit and partly miscoloured. Seems to be a problem with Somedit. Map 255 (Mana Fortress Entrance) has the same issues.

04)
Map 195 (after beating the Grand Palace) has misplaced tiles and transparency issues, the map seems generally broken.

05)
Pure Land (beginning at 198) has a special shadow layer + transparent waterfalls, which can be deactivated by unchecking Layer 2 FG. It's probably better to rip both layers and the assembled version.

06)
Sames goes for Matango and its outskirts (map 222-224). For map 222, uncheck Layer 1 BG and Layer 1 FG, since Somedit displays it in a glitchy way. The map seems generally broken, pretty sure this is Somedits fault.

07)
Map 277 (Undine's cave opens an entrance after you defeat the Biting Lizard. Somedit displays this entrance as two black squares (one large, one small). Also a Somedit error. Same thing on map 285, 286, 287, 295, 367, 370 and generally a thing that happens, when tiles are shifted due to activated switches and stuff.

08)
By the way, absolutely all maps are wrapping around themselves. Which means, you activate walk thru walls, go to the right and after some time, suddenly enter the left of the same map again. This works with all directions, like on map 332 (Santa's House), which looks broken. This is actually how it looks like if you cross the map border and enter the very same map again. Granted, Somedit could make it a little bit more appealing by arranging it so that you can't see the harsh crossings. I guess this should be edited when ripped.

09)
From time to time you see pitch-black maps, these were probably deleted during the development process of the game. Then there are scrapped maps, which consist of jumbled tiles with wrong palettes (map 398). You can change the palette of them on the right side (change Palette set 0 to 25 or 26), but it's still unusable. More of these start at map 482.

10)
The interior of Grand Palace (sand area) beginning with map 432 has display problems with its corals and some other small elements, since the miss their background.

11)
Map 444 (Pure Land, where you fight one of the bosses), looks like the walls have some miscolourings.

And this is how you extract maps from Secret of Mana through Somedit plus all issues that got my attention.

Secret of Mana, Terranigma, Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia/Time. There are many good SNES RPGs where the main protagonists haven't been ripped yet.

Let's see if I can change it for some of them

Progress on Randi:
Two of his side run frames from Somedit seem to be the originals, but the game itself uses glitched out versions. CaliOS, who ripped three Randi sheets on TSR, just replaced them with frames from the walk animation for his sheets.

If they're presented as glitched in the game, I'd include them in the extras or something just for completion. But that's just me.

I'm still not sure how far I want to go when it comes to the main characters and their weapons. I guess the character frames for the 27 animations (9 weapons, 3 directions) without weapon sprites + effects are enough? Since these animations are very glitchy, it would be an enormous hassle to do them plus I wouldn't be able to deliver a proper rip anyway. I'm also thinking of ripping the weapons plus effects first, giving them their own sheet for a better overview and then attaching them as separate pieces to the respective main character animations, to show what animation uses which weapon/effects. Then again, it would also affect A LOT of other animations, like walking, running, getting hit, etc. It's like a myriad of stuff to go through.

Edit: I just realized these 9 weapons also have 9 levels each with every level having a different animation. This would result in 81 animations and for all 3 directions... uhm, 243 animations?

Anyway, just submitted both world maps plus tilesets:
https://www.spriters-resource.com/snes/s...et/129717/ World Map (Night)
https://www.spriters-resource.com/snes/s...et/129716/ World Map (Day)
https://www.spriters-resource.com/snes/s...et/129715/ World Map Tilesets

Also made a rough rip for Purim/Primm & Popoi
[Image: IuObWvw.png]
Unless they have glitchy side run frames too, these are all of their sprites.

@Ton
Guess I will swap the glitchy sprites with the frames from Somedit and mark them as such.

@the shirt ninja
Glad that the tool was useful, the map viewer has actually even more display errors than I thought. I overlooked everything below map 128, which also have some major bugs. At least the character sprites are fine.
