Rejected Mechakoopa Sprite
#1
I made a sheet of custom SMW styled Mechakoopa sprites based on their modern look/their look in SMW artwork. I felt since the beginning that the mouth opening animation looked a little clunky but I don't know if you guys can spot anything else that I could improve on.

They're pretty good sprites. But the things I see wrong are this:

* I think the sheet could do without the art on the left. Usually I wouldn't say much about things like that, but since this is a SMM-ish sheet, I think it could do without it. Or if you really want it on there, minimize it to just a single Mecha Koopa since you're showing that it's based from the SMW art. (to save space on the sheet)

* The shading on the fourth frame's hind leg is wrong

*  The front sprites's beaks are a little bit off, try experimenting with them until they match the size of the side sprites's beaks

* The eyes when the Blue and Red don't disappear in the real games. (this one isn't important, but I thought I'd let you know)

* It might need some missile sprites, and some laser sprites

But they're not bad though.

1. That makes sense, I think if I try to modify this sheet I'll just get rid of the artwork as most would understand they're supposed to look like modern Mechakoopas.

2. I don't see any problems in the shading of any of the legs... I might take a closer look later but right now I don't see any issues.

3. I'll see what I can do with that...

4. By "the eyes dissapearing" do you mean them flashing when they're about to shoot? Because I also took inspiration from the Mechakoopas in the NSMBU style where that is part of the shooting animation.

5. I did think about adding the missiles but since they had already been ripped and they didn't need to be modified I didn't add them because I thought it'd feel redundant.

Thanks for the help!

1. Sounds good!

2. Oh wait, I made a mistake, I meant foot, not leg. Sorry!

3. I watched a video on YouTube with them, and I found out that the Red one's eyes don't disappear, but when the Blue one is charging up it's laser, the Blue one's eyes disappear, until it shoots

Your welcome! Good luck on your Mecha Koopa! Smile

It's done! I followed your advice and I think it actually does look much better, getting rid of the artwork was a big help too! I didn't notice just how much space it took. I also added a few minor things like variant names and a regular bullet missile for the normal Mechakoopa because I realized the normal Mechakoopa's shooting sprites were kinda useless without a unique missile to go along with them. Really hope it gets approved this time!

The main issue for me looking at them is the front sprites, imo they seem too thin and jagged i guess? I think it woudl help by thickening the head up a little, and the body a little further, give the character some 3D depth. It may also help you to make the beaks look a bit more rounded and on-model.

Also, dont be afraid to drop a couple of details on the front facing sprites if afterwards you find they look too busy, readability > detail in smaller sprites like this.

Hope this helps!
