The sheet with ID #1 is Bart Simpson from The Simpsons Arcade game. You can find it here: https://www.spriters-resource.com/arcade...s/sheet/1/

It's possible that there are sheets older than that one submitted to an older version of the site but that's as close as we're going to get with the data we have now.

That's definitely not the first sprite sheet ever on the site, I've got submissions that date back even further (my oldest is Dr. Crygor from Wario Ware Twisted, from August 2006, Bart's from March 2008) and even then there were hundreds of sheets on the site beforehand.

To be honest, we don't even remember anymore.

That's what I meant - there may well be older sheets on the site with higher IDs or those older sheets might not be on the site at all any more. But it's impossible to get any more specific than that with what's available on the site.

We can't remember anymore... The information is lost due to the redesign of the site and the site moving from various places to its current home. A lot of the staff weren't around during the earlier days and many that were had retired. Also the internet at its earliest form is a metric ton of lost media to the point of most personal websites from the Geocities era are gone.

While the first one uploaded onto the current system is Bart, there are older sheets than that. My first sheet that I had done was this back in 30th December 2006 (older than Bart) but there are far older sheets.

So I've decided to do some digging just for this thread and found the OG tSR, ninsprites with the earliest that the Wayback Machine archived was from September 2003. What I discovered was that it started off as Bacon (or McBacon as he was known)'s own ripping site that shortly evolved to a site that covered ripping and customs as we know. To think that within that short space of time, the likes of Ton and Toadkarter started doing rips and customs. Sadly most of the sprites aren't archived but can cross-reference between the two. A fact on the sheets that still exist on there, Bacon originally didn't put credit tags on his rips.

These sheets are the earliest known rips that tSR has (all by Bacon):
Bowser (sheet lost but icon matches possibly different revision, the earliest backup was September 9, 2003)
Yoshi's Safari General Sprites (the earliest mention was September 9, 2003, sheet and icon were lost but the sheet was preserved in a December backup with no changes!)
General Sprites (no changes!, earliest backup October 19, 2003 possibly earlier)
Bomb Rally (sheet lost but the icon shows one of the sprites, earliest backup October 19, 2003 possibly earlier)
Quick Draw (no changes!, earliest backup October 19, 2003 possibly earlier - uncredited on tSR!)
Boneheads (no changes!)
Dribble & Spitz (no changes!)
Mona (original version)
General Sprites (original version)
General Sprites (original version)
Kat and Ana (sheet lost, icon features Ana)
Pilot Pico / Dr Stewart (original sheet lost but the icon has the two ships)
Air and Sea Units (sheet lost, icon features one of the units)
Racer Avatars (not the same revision that Bacon originally ripped as it became a png but Samurai Goroh's icon matches the site)

It is highly likely that this sheet was also from this batch however both the icon and sheet are lost. The filename just says fzero14.gif. The same for this one. While Dr. Crygor and Orbulon are preserved, the sheets on tSR have been updated since. 9 Volt was also updated (as a note, the 9 Volt sheet was mentioned in the earliest backup as just added, ninsprites didn't do updates at its earliest form).

As for customs, the earliest that I can remember is SemiJuggalo's DK. Also at the time, the most common sprite style was from Mega Man 7 so there were A LOT of Mega Man edits around online. Yet... these are the earliest known customs:
Petey Piranha (Bacon's mascot, possible later revision)
Wind Waker Characters
Jungle Japes (lost on Bacon's site but the icon matches and that being a GIF)
Super Flat Zone (both icon and sheet are lost but the filename says flat.gif and is from SSBM)
