Ripping from licensed roblox games?
#1
Question
hello!! first of all i would like to clarify i don't have the knowledge to rip any 3D models, let alone models from roblox games that aren't public. this thread is just being started as a hypothetical question since i don't feel like clogging up the comments on the actual roblox page but i was still curious as an avid roblox player myself.

so, roblox is a platform that's full of user-generated content. from what i've read, the rule of thumb concerning ripping roblox models is to rip models from the official roblox account only, which is completely understandable on the basis of UGC (user-generated content) being made by individual community members meaning rights attribution will get tricky. not to mention ripping anything not publicly accessible on the site (aka actual ingame models and not just accessories) would require hacking and the risk of getting your account banned, which those braver than me could probably attempt. needless to say, the site policy is in place for a reason and i understand and respect that.

however!!! as of late there have been sponsored games popping up on the site, as in official games made in conjunction with companies in order to get their name spread around to the playerbase. there have been official games for barbie, hello kitty, sonic, and even doraemon, all officially licensed by their parent companies; not to mention new companies springing up in order to make these games like gamefam and suit up games. they even have their own UGC tied to them, that is officially licensed accessories to go with the games. brand tie-ins like this used to be handled through the official roblox account directly, having their gear and hats released through them, but ever since the site allowed accessories to be uploaded by users the companies have started releasing games/accessories independently of roblox themselves.

with all of this in mind, what does that mean for ripping models from officially licensed sources on the roblox website that aren't roblox? would they be allowed on the site or not, and if so how would they be categorized? if not, why not? same question goes for anyone who hypothetically rips models from those licensed games. after all, some of these games contain 3D models made specifically for said games and i feel like those should get a chance to be ripped same as anything else, since they're exclusive to the platform. (referring to models from LICENSED GAMES ONLY, games made by individual creators are not part of this conversation!!)

my personal opinion is that they should be allowed, since they remind me much more of licensed console titles (think of brand tie-in games for stuff like the DS) or steam games (since steam is a platform to release games through) than the typical games roblox is known for, though i will admit that this is a tricky matter. roblox is considered a game but in reality it's a platform/game engine hosting millions of individual games. given the engine's progress in recent years, some incredible stuff has been made using it, and it also doesn't quite have the same cohesive identity that it used to. that being said, i wouldn't even begin to know how this would theoretically be categorized, and given that i'm new to the site i'm sure there could be a number of reasons for this not to be a thing that i'm just unaware of. which is why i'm asking here!! if anyone else has thoughts on the matter or even more information on the topic that i failed to mention, i would love to hear about it!!

i hope you have a lovely day no matter who you are Cute
