i am not trying to offend, but i think you should start trying small sprites, until you get some basic notion, you know.... try doing a... FFIVA styled homer... Lol, i am not kiddind... i mean the world sprites... Old ff´s sprites are wonderful to study these things... or try to do simpler, smaller sidescroller things... say, a floating skull... but the best thing you could try(wonderful for me)... TRY MAKING ICONS!!!!!! start with 16x16, and go to 24x24!
PS: In no way i am trying to offend. gave suggestions that worked for me... At my sight i think you need some basic color notions and line notion. By making smaller stuff, it is easier to delineate acctually and you can evolve your line skills better. oh, and try not to create shades of a color by just adding black or white. say, a yellow ball looks cool with a purple shadow, for example... and i think all cartoon sprites, what includes homer, should have an single shadow, i mean, not degradé. like animes, for example. Just thoughts, you can ignore this completely if you want. bye ^^
Sorry for my mistakes on english, people..... I am Brazilian, and to worsen that... i learnt english playing Final Fantasy and asking my mother.
EDIT: Now, 4 years have passed, and I`m an english teacher.
Thanks everyone.
I'm going to follow your advice on spriting small stuff guys and by the way.
Koshes:
Notice anything about its shading? It's coming from the right
WHERE the artists shade?Where there's folds and places where another thing blocks its light.
WHY they're shading?to give depth and a realistic feeling to the drawing/sprite/pixelart
What gives him that look of DEPTH?It's shading
I don't think those questions were looking to be answered...
But yeah, so far I've not really been impressed with any of your work (line art or shading) - only with your inability to throw in the towel.
So you have to motivation, you just need the skills. I mean anyone who sticks at anything long enough will get it, I'm sure something will eventually click within and you'll get it right.
Yeah I don't think they were soppuse to be answer but anyways I'm working on some stuff but I won't post it up just yet.I'm thinking of spriting one thing everyday for a month to see if I improve.
I'm also thinking of making a new game every week but let's see.

Hahaha!! To prove what goemar said, i will pop here my first pixel art...heh... i spent 3 hours on it... i will edit, 5 mins
edited: Here it is.... My first sprite...
i mispelled 7... = D
Now compare with my sig? I thought i was never going to do pixel art and was always blabbling how others are good.. now look at me...(not literally)
That was some years ago. I gave up, and only tried again recently, but this time i had the dedication, pretty much like you. I went and created lots of sprites, i studied them, and i improved dramatically. I think the essence of spriting is perseverance. know those car games where you start to slowly accelerate and then you accelerate more, and more, and... you won. Pretty much like it. and, if you stop, remember your acceleration resets too? you grow colder and still? you are doing the exact opposite. you are accelerating.
now, i improved dramatically in the course of my spriting life. that was my attempt at aya brea 3 years ago. i said 3 years. So, your dedication will be doing wonders to you...!
You do have dedication. now go study other sprites ^^'
and do small stuff ^^'²
Edited, so it would made more sense ^^' (i write very poorly at times )

Yeah I think it has.So you want to see what I have done so far for my oncoming game?
I think the they are really good compare to everything else I have done even if they're really small.
Check it out.
