I guess it depends on who you speak with. I know some "purists" would probably frown upon it seeing how I didn't create the sprite from just opening up a blank canvas in paint.
However believe it or not, I find it difficult to just open up paint and create a sprite, I'm very reference-reliant when spriting and hate to go about things blindly, so to speak. But to each his own, eh?

yeah, you're damn right to each his own. purists are retards and communists. not everyone can do everything the same way... there would be no innovation. My very most hated proverb of old has always been "Great minds think alike." that is the dumbest thing i've ever heard.
Yeah, I can believe you're not good at starting from a blank paint page. I can't do that OR draw anything, spriting just isn't a skill of mine. I'm a writer and a musician. And while I tend not to fraternize with other people in my field, i'm sure most others who heard of my methods would call me terrible and inexperienced because of them, no matter how excellent the end product is. why? because most talented people are arrogant jerks. It's always good to find the few who think with a clear mind and take things for what they are.

how on earth tracing over your own drawing could be considering cheating.

dunno. i had never heard anyone say that before.

Well just something to show that I'm not dead, though it isn't terribly significant.
Was requested to make a wallcrush sprite for a project, so I went ahead and whipped this up. This is one of the few sprites I made in paint from scratch without using my earlier discussed method. 4 colors: |
