while your execution is really good, I think I understand why they chose that guy's desingn over yours. His design transmits more fun than yours, imo. A festival should transmit fun, and really, yours isn't exactly /fun/. It's two crawfishes posing in front of a map of the state. It looks great, but it isn't as colorful and fun-inducing as the winner piece. That's my honest opinion though.
Also, one thing that I learnt with those type of compos is that people don't really care for technique, but more for the idea AND the caricature-ish feel of the piece. I remember my sister participating on a compo to design the city's sports mascot. She did a small girl with elaborated clothing that resembled sports elements and it was the cutest thing (referencing the city's 'the little princess of the state' status), but the winner design was a plain parrot. Thank you for your feedback, Gors-bro(and being honest of course), and as well as everyone else's. The only thing I don't understand the problem with mine is the color. I made a print of it a while back(for a gallery I'm having), and the colors were pretty vivid imo. I can understand the "spirit" of mine lacking compared to the winner's. After all, it is just two crawfish slapped on a state. If I had more time, I would've done something more energetic and fancy, but I'll just get ready for next year. I hate to hear about what happened with your sister though.. ) : It sounded like a really innovative and creative idea and I hate to see such ideas lose to something so simple as a Parrot. I understand the concept of contests(strive more for the idea than what kind of techniques were used).. it's just the reason I kinda raged that this one won is well:
1. It looks very generic. If you've seen the past posters, it looks just about the same as past ones. Doesn't even look like he tried to be all that creative.
2. As others were saying, you can actually tell this did not take long to make as shown in how the buildings and the gradient backgrounds were made. I believe a person should have to work for something to gain it..but that's just me.
3. ...Crawfish boobies lol not really serious about this one but it's fun to poke at..if you catch my drift

I can't remember if I posted these, but these are pictures I made for my VGR article last year that I didn't get cleaned up in time for the article itself. It was a Legend of Mana article, relating to the poor Golem AI (at least when you don't know what you're doing), the poking fun at Larc, and referencing the incredibly heavy concept of derelict toys with memories filled with war and terror.
The golem either misses...
... stares into space...
... or chills out on the sidelines.
At best it might hit YOU.
"You cannot escape your destiny!" (Actual dialogue)
(After waiting for the player to do all the copious side quests and crafting.) "At least I'm already dead..." (He's also supposed to be covered in cobwebs that I didn't ink)
"Right there... not there, here... The wound.. that's what keeps me going..." (ALMOST actual dialogue)
yeah, I know all the circumstances while you were making this piece, heh
I think that if there was a way to fuse both your entry and his (use his idea with your technique), then we'd have a real winner. Just pointless brainstorming, though, as the contest is already over.
Silly me, you guys know the circumstances and everything with this piece since y'all saw each step of the way :B
I am planning on doing something like that for next year, seeing as that's pretty much what they want composition wise(even if it is generic).
Thank you guys once again on the feedback.
AND NOW TO HARASS YOU GUYS FOR MORE:
Which one is better, left or right?

The right seems more vivid, so I'm going to say right, even though I'm a lefty.

Koopa, the right is more vivid, but the left reminds me more of a fish's scales, which is an original idea for a dragon? Dunno

I've got some year-old stuff that I don't remember if I posted or not, so here they are.
The prototype main character called the Clockwork Knight for a game I was thinking up calls Block King, an action/puzzle game.
Enemies from the Cocoron sequel I've been developing a text file full of ideas for, but no actual gameplay engine. :/ Featured are a Shark Knight, an unfinished Crab Apple, and the Dandy Lion.
Also from the aforementioned Cocoron sequel, the prototype for the final boss of the Food "world" in the game, the Darkberry King Parm. The main NPCs and villains of this section of the game, for whatever reason, I made as parodies from the Ys series of games. One of the characters is called Apple the Red (the main character in Ys is Adol the Red). Parm (Named after Darm and based in design on a boss from Ys IV on the PC Engine who looks like jelly) is imperfectly resurrected from a jar of Darkberry Jam. Basically he's an imperfect dark god.. of berries.
ALSO from my Cocoron idea are two of the three main villains: Ringo (formerly named Ringcat) and Ragshield. I didn't flesh out Ringo as much, and the other villain Ashling was so unfinished I didn't even get her in the shot.
Finally one that's NOT Cocoron related. This character, Sharl, is from another story. Basically his clan all wear masks, but when they remove their masks they suck those who see their face into a world where they take the form of a hideous demon that compliments or contrasts their personality. Sharl is a near-mindless berserker who wields a sword bigger than he is (Not pictured).

That's the first thing that came to mind when I read that part.
her eyebrows are on top of the cap, and I know it's wrong. but not doing it made her look so empty so I added it anyway.

Yeah, but it gives her a bit of more emotion than without the eyebrow placement.
