I know that I said that I stepped down a year and 5 months ago but life is an unpredictable creature with things not happening your way, bad things and even a couple of good things. With life going to pot (let's just say its hard to talk when most people on other forums/online are huge anime/RPG fans with sprinkles of Steam or hardcore FPS shooters or sports/music fans or even transport fans and when you're not really into them things...), I thought I go back and do a rip just for old time sake. Will there be more rips in the future? I don't even know myself. I did experiment regarding textures for PS1 games and forgot all about it but for now, stick to what I know. Oh and thank you very much to all people past and present.

I haven't done this in a while but might as well explain. Looking though MAME and I found this game. Well it isn't much of a game but it has sprites in it and the origins are unknown. Is it a bootleg? Is it some sort of sprite test? A very early prototype of a released or unreleased game? Who knows, it doesn't even have a name of this game (I called it what MAME called it). Oh and apart from 1 character, none of the fighters have names so it is more of a descriptive route plus there's lots of unused sprites but they have no palettes.

Some people think it is a prototype for Martial Champion but I'm not as convinced. From what we know, a bootlegger might have ripped the fonts from that game like Mug Smashers ripped the fonts from The Combatribes and it was a practice that some seedy companies did. Besides Konami wouldn't have made a game that ugly and its not even their animation style, plus Martial Champion has big and beefy sprites filling the screen, something this "game" doesn't have (its about Fatal Fury size).

Still a bit rusty in terms of ripping though and the new set up is a bit different than I used to.

Oh and before anyone asks, I looked up the rules regarding bumping an old thread and yes, over a year old is a bit bad but Rule 1.3 says making 1 thread regarding submissions would be nice and besides I think it is better than making a new thread then a mod or admin merges the thread with this one unless it causes problems with the forums. If I did the wrong thing, I'm sorry...

how could you do wrong? Surprise
we rather you bump this to add content than make a new one or bump with spam, that's how the rules work.

Nothing wrong with bumping your own submissions topic with something new, no matter how long ago the last post was. Smile

Yes, the palette looks funny since the character isn't finished and that's how it appears in game. I'm sorry.

Super Breakout (Arcade)
Everything

Managed to have a few minutes ripping this classic. I think apart from the ball, the rest of the game is made of tiles due to the limitations of the hardware (in fact the tiles show up in black and white and uses some trick to display colour).

Unless I'm mistaken, it currently is one of the oldest games on the site along with Space Invaders. Now what's older than these two? Well out of well known games, there's Pong and the original Breakout but they do not use ROMs or processors (it was done by discrete logic) and besides Super Breakout is a microprocessor/ROM remake of Breakout. Computer Space is even older than them but still the same. Right from what I read Gran Trak 10 was the first game to use ROMs but they still used discrete logic so that can't be emulated. So that means that Midway's Gun Fight (1975) is the first ever game that can be ripped or for a more famous game Sprint 2 (1976, Atari) that itself is a remake of Gran Trak 10 since both games used ROMs and microprocessors. I thought Sea Wolf II was the first but was mistaken. Whether I'll do either depends.

Sprint 2 (Arcade)

In today's episode of Yawackhary's Believe it or Not, I look at one of the first sprite rippable games Sprint 2 that itself is a sequel to Gran Trak 10 the first game to use ROMs [but can't be ripped] and more known by younger people (including myself) by its later sequels Super Sprint and Championship Sprint, both that are in various Midway collections. While looking at Gun Fight, the first ever rippable game that is possible, it turned out not to have a tile viewer but also TileMolester doesn't seem to display anything clearly enough even though you can see mangled text. So Sprint 2 would have to do that itself is the first rippable Atari game. Due to MAME standards it is classed as a clone to Sprint One that irony not only came out later but is a hack of this game [so Sprint One should be the clone] to remove the 2 player support.

Also fact time, the programmer Dennis Koble later worked on PGA Tour Golf series, the Genesis port of RoadBlasters and Sonic Spinball. Sonic Spinball? Yep.

The sequel now in colour but strangely enough released after Sprint 8 so yeah you have Sprint 2, Sprint 8, Sprint 4 and then Sprint One. It is to tell how many maximum players are allowed but personally Sprint One shouldn't be made since it is disappointing compared to this one. Before anyone asks, yes the 7 is faulty on one side and that's how it is. There is another version on MAME but I think it isn't dumped properly since the cars don't look right. First game to have unused sprites I wonder?

Now these games have gone back to storage and the only reason why they are ripped are due to its historic nature and that they are easy to do.

I am awful at this classic but it's addicting. Any stray pixels you see are in the tiles/ROM of that sprite so it is the fault of Midway really. I miss Midway but only pre-2001/2002 Midway, their later output wasn't very good well apart from the Midway Arcade Treasures series.

Anyway, I don't know what to rip next (not B.Rap Boys). It has to be a sort of well known game but it is also one that isn't difficult. You see I am awful at games, always Easy Mode and struggle at even some so called easy games. As an example even that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon game that just come out, struggling at that and people call it an easy game... Had to admit it at some point. It's just that I'm sure that tSR has a game that either isn't done or only a few sprites have been ripped and can be ripped.

Saved! Hopefully we'll be able to start uploading again soon...

As for the next game, how about Snake Rattle n Roll on Genesis?

Also known as Top Speed in the arcade, was one of the earliest Sharp X68k ports and uses the engine that was later used in Chase HQ. Nothing much to say.

That's a good idea Ton and did look at it but it's going to take a little while. Well before I have grey hair anyway.

Got it! It reminds me a bit of Lucky and Wild (I think that's the name...) the arcade game.
