Seperating beginners from the rest.
#61
Make a poll or something, and stop once you get X number of votes. This is a pretty big thing, so you shouldn't go off the opinions of the few people posting here.
Still thinking of a new name.

I've just been skimming through the topic, but from what I've read this would be a complete waste of time.

The Beginners section will no doubt have members who think they're experts because they can change every sprite of sonic into a sprite of sonic with sunglasses and a coat. People will tell him he sucks, and we'll have another Razorthecurse incident. This would happen from time to time, and more frequently than not considering the recent boost in sonic editors.

Say xxXXSonic EditorXXxx joins the forum, and thinks he's good enough for the expert board, he obviously isn't, and he is told this multiple times by every member who posts in his topic, not counting the few alts he's made to back himself up and the few friends he's had join to continue backing him up. He's going to continue doing this until a mod finds a legitimate reason to ban him(and i'd just like to mention that with these guys, i don't think waiting for them to break the rules is really what you should be doing, when someone comes in and continually starts shitstorms in their topics, ignores advice, and acts like the biggest baddest artist around the forum, you should at least suspend him instead of keeping this mindset that UNTIL RULES ARE BROKEN, HE CAN'T BE BANNED!!!!1) or until he brings a bunch of friends to attempt to troll the forum. On top of that, you can't rule out the fact that alts being made by actual members will increase so that they can troll people in the beginners board with horrible sprites, just for a quick laugh.

And you can't ignore the fact that people here tend to have very biased opinions on spriters, there are members here that really shouldn't be part of the beginners board, granted they DO still suck, they shouldn't have to be grouped in with the piles and piles of edits and recolors of the exact same sonic sheet. But they will, and this will cause hurt feelings, and potentially lost members.

It's a broken idea, and really isn't worth the effort. Stop worrying about trying to separate the edits and recolors, and simply watch the behavior of these editors and recolor-ers. If they're getting pissy because someone's being a dick to them, suspend the person being a dick. If they're getting pissy because they're getting valid albeit, not sugarcoated advice instead of ass licks and ball nibbles, suspend them. You guys are on this mindset that until someone posts porn or harasses someone, they've done nothing to be suspended. Causing a shitstorm because you refuse to improve at all and want nothing more than to get the biggest baddest 2 second edit of a sonic sprite should be grounds for a suspension or ban.

It's a simple problem with a much simpler solution that you're considering.

that's why if this came to pass, they'd have to make 3 sections.

However, that would inadvertantly turn out like this:

Beginners Board-Sonic recolors
Sprite Discussion-Mainly edits, a few customs
Pro Boards-most customs

no, it would be more like
beginners- edits, poor customs
main- good customs, maaaaybe a couple very heavy edits.
pro- crazy crap

Yes, but again, you're looking at this from a bad point of view. You can't sort out 'poor' customs' and 'good customs' from the 'crazy crap' without starting fights, and causing unnecessary wastes of time. The forums are fine as they are, and trying to separate the spriters into categories is a waste of time and will only cause the members to see how the rest of the forum actually sees them and either a) cause unneeded ego boosts, and more dick comments, AND b) cause members to leave forever

if we were to look at this logically, everyone would be in beginners, around two members would be in main or intermediate, and no one would be in pro, because no one here is that good. If you really want to stop the sonic threads from turning into fights as often as they have been, monitor them more, and as soon as something happens, whether it's the thread starter getting pissy, someone posting a dickish comment about how edits suck, or whatever you feel is 'something starting' suspend the person responsible and move on.

suspending people responsible for starting fights is much easier and a much smarter solution than what you guys are planning with this

How about letting them reply to threads in experienced, but not make new threads?

I agree, this would cause a lot of conflict (and considering that I've seen where we used to be, take it from me: We would just turn back into the old Pixeltendo if we caused more conflict). More conflict would lead to tighter rules, tighter rules would lead to broken rules, and broken rules would lead to even tighter rules until the belt is so tight we're bleeding through it.

I think most of this has got to do with total noobs, though. IMO, Not everyone who has just recently started posting on boards is a noob. I think that there is some sort of source where noobs get this false sense of cool, think they're fitting in, and then get banned. I think if noobs did not start out typing horribly and talking like they know what they're talking about, they would be very easy to educate and in no time they would, in fact, be semi-pro.

And it's not all about age; I think the younger people learn, the less likely they are to be noobis. Like, I go to PureZC, where people make Zelda Classic quests, and there is an eight year old there who not only is great at making ZC quests, but he also has excellent spelling and grammar (for an eight year old, at least) and could easily pass for a respected veteran had he not already disclosed his age. QED, young people != noobs.

Whoa. This has been probably the best post on this entire thread.
Yes, I had forgotten about the alts and friend manipulation used by some people around here, and the way as even the most horrible people keeps getting a new chance after new chance from the staff, so they always get to do whataver they want to.

The spriter categories separation seemed good on paper, but yes, TSR's current state will never make it possible.

How about keeping everything the way it is, its not that bad.

I think the boards should instead be split into WIP Rips, submissions edits with those all going under one board, not seperate. Keep the current one too, none of this pro, medium, beginner nonsense.

Pretty much what I said earlier. I agree with all these points.
Keep reading, bookworm.

Off-Topic: I hate it when people use the term "old Pixeltendo" like they really know what the OLD Pixeltendo was like. Tongue

On Topic: I suppose it is a broken idea to separate the experts from the beginners. But you must admit tensions between the two have been higher then they've been before. We're looking for solutions for these problems. I think the beginners are just intimidated. And it makes them act stupid.

*pulls out cane and glasses*

In my day we were all noobs. Where every crappy edit was gold... Gold we used for our crappy comics! Weren't tension in my day, no-sir-ree! Yup, and Petey-Piranha was about the best sprite you could make! *cough hack* oooh! My lombago!
