I hate to do a topic like this

if you guys like the Viewful Joe sprites, then why not base the sprite style around them?

Because he's supposed to mimic a cel-shaded style. Nobody else (but Toon Link) would look good like this.

oh, ok.

Edit: Why not base them off an existing style?

Because that would be a cop out, in my eyes anyway.

I'm so agreeing on this. No one will try to sprite something if the style is a pain in the ass.
I don't even think that my Captain Falcon sprites match the style right. When I tried to make it fit the style more, it looked quite ugly...

A new, simpler style would probably get some people to work on the project. When the new style is finialized, someone should make a tutorial for it, which would attract even more people to try this style.
I think nobody made a tutorial for the old style because it is pretty hard to tell what makes this style so unique (in my opinion).

I guess this is all my fault when I made Mario and everyone was like "FOLLOW THAT!"

That's-a what happens when you officiate a sprite style for a project that a 13 year-old wipped up.

I'm more than happy to change Mario in the new coming sprite style. I'm even more happy to start spriting Mario again.
Need help in redesigning the style? I'm your man. (I was the original man too.)

ninspriterx, if I'm not mistaken, didn't you originally have a mock up for a Mario and Luigi that were larger than the current templates before everybody requested a scale down?

This is my attempt at a different style.

(1) Type 1 Style. This uses a lot of basic ideas from the current style, but simplifies upon it with a smaller color count and a use of more defined outlines. This makes the style easier to read without removing a large amount of details, however, it still suffers from similar problems.

(2) Type 2 Style. This is the same as Type 1; the main difference is that the color choices are a lot more saturated and contain more contrast, adding a big amount of vibrance and flavor to the sprite.

(3) Type 3 Style. This takes the idea of simplifying the current style and simplifies it even more by using fewer colors and puts less emphasis on shading. This style is a bit more dedicated and reworked to be closer to Ton's Porky WIP. The sprites in this style are even EASIER to read, but they may tend to lose flavor and detail.

(4) Type 4 Style. Same as type 2, this uses the style of Type 3 but with more saturated and contrasting colors.

Porky is only in that style because I suck at shading. No need to bring everyone else's quality down. Tongue

A) I love this Snake.
B ) I'm not really sure which one I like best. :X

I think I like the '4th Style' Snake best

Also, I'm all for starting this over...Especially since I think that the sprites vary way too much...And just throwing it out there, but do you guys think we need a defined Palette?

Possibly. I don't remember too much, but it's likely that happened.
Although!!: That's wouldn't have much about what I'm talking about now.

Sure I could have had early versions of Mario and Luigi, but it's when I first created this version:
that people started using "this style"

Along the way I perfected the sprite keeping it perfectly in the style that was being used:

another fun fact: since it was "my style" i also ended up spriting almost half of the roaster.

i like 2

the colors in brawl were just to "real" IMO when these characters arent real. I just don't see a point in mimicking that.....

Personally I think we should use a more cartoon-y style on characters (excluding characters who aren't from a cartoon-y series, like Link et al, Samus, Captain Falon, Snake, etc). It would make them more fun to sprite.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Maybe some nice, vibrant colors. Not super bright or anything but enough to make the sprites pop out nicely.

That was one of my big problems with the old style. It was made to look so realistic that is lost some of the fun of the characters.
