I actually loved this final boss too, despite the fact that the bosses got bigger, I still liked him a lot. The AI was a problem that I had with him, which I'm sure everyone had with him... I could get through the fight without getting hit, even when I let him do his stronger attacks like his meteor shower.
One gripe I had with it though was that in the American manual, he was right in there. And I sat there looking at the picture saying "Wow, that guy is cool enough to be the final boss!" And of course, there he was, final boss, right there in the manual...
