The Smash Bros. Project 4.5
(01-11-2009, 04:56 PM)omegakyogre Wrote: The purpose of the project is not to trace. Just because, for instance, the sprite's idle stance is not directly as seen in the game does not mean it should be re-worked.
Bowser, Dedede, and Yoshi all look traced; the problem's with them, not vice-versa.
Granted, I just think Bowser needs more of an outline and Yoshi needs to have his body facing 3/4 towards the screen as prescribed on the guide sheet.
I never mentioned tracing. I'm not encouraging it either. What I meant was making the sprites have the same stance as in SSBB, and this doesn't necessarily involve tracing. Tracing is not PA nor spriting. Even if the stances aren't the ones in-game, the characters I selected do have other problems (minor ones mostly, so no worries).

Would you care to say the problems that you see?
Thanked by:
It kinda hard to fix problems if we don't know what they are, so please state them...
Thanked by:
I stated them but I didn't do it case by case, so I'll do it right now Smile:
DK: his head is out of proportion compared to his body, his fists are too small and his arms too swollen.
Captain Falcon: his thighs are rectangular, his feet are too big.
Link: exagerated traits and proportions
Samus: her legs are too short, head too big, canon a pixel too long.
Luigi: his body is a bit rounder normally, his arms aren't long enough.
Marth: head/torso/limbs out of proportion.
Zelda-Sheik: head/torso/limbs out of proportion.
Peach: actually she's fine :s
Ice Climbers: they're too big if you compare them to their "normal-sized" friends
Snake: head/torso/limbs out of proportion, can't be read very well, colours are too dark.
ZS Samus: head/torso/limbs out of proportion.
Wario: there isn't that feel to the sprite, that thing that makes it recognisable or that makes you say "Spot on!"
Diddy: black outline, arms not long enough and hands should be a little bigger as well as feet.
Toon Link: no facial details.
Ganondorf: head is a bit too big, a bit more contrast needed in palette.
Roy: the proportions-> he isn't supposed to have big hands, an RPG face (some people will slap me for that). His boots are a bit bigger I believe.
Falco: thigh/lower leg ratio not right, too much lower leg, hands not big enough, shoes too thick.
Ike: head/torso/limbs out of proportion.
I think all the "normal" sized sprites should be a few pixels higher, too, because for now there isn't much room for loads of detail.
But I may be completely on the other side of the sprite style (yes, I know that part of the style is mentioned on the sheet and I have read it), for instance on the Ike, Roy, Marth, Peach etc. style.

Btw anyone ever heard of luigi player on freewebs.com?

I was looking for some brawl spriters for the project and he is actually pretty good at making sprites at first he kinda lagged a bit but know his sprites are pretty good but i don't know if he traced or not but he has almost all of Diddy Kongs' attacks
Thanked by:
I've heard of him through other forums, but I forgot which. Bring him here, I'd like to see his sprites,

If anyone wants to rework these sprites to match what Chris is saying, feel free, but I think it should be said that Smash Bros is by its very nature a cartoon-y game, and thus sprites thereof have fittingly out-of-proportion limbs, etc. I think at some point you just have to call "artistic license."
But I'm not here to spark a debate. Asked and answered, we have critiques.

Hey guys, I know its kind of out of nowhere, but I decided to revise Ice Climbers a bit. I still haven't change the actual shape of him, but I'm thinking about changing his face and head a bit, as well as making him a tad smaller overall. I'll of course do the same to Nana, if I am allowed. Well here's my recoloring so far:

So once again, this is not the finished one, just a first step to my edit.

I guess you're allowed, continue.

If only I could remember who was making those. It's been such a long time.

We're all going for the same goal. We should be allowed to edit each others sprites if it means progress for the project.

Also I agree with Chris' previous posts that more accurate the better. Since when was there a rule against accuracy? Yoshi is one of the best sprites there!
