It was just basically raw pixel data with width/height before (hence compressing it really cut down on file size, as you saw). With files that compress crazy well like that, it's probably worth opening in a hex editor to see if there's repeating patterns (even if you don't know much about hex editing), or going someplace like http://rawpixels.net/ just to see if you can figure it out yourself. But hey, no biggie.
