Honestly, I think that the jump from SMB to 2, 3 and World, in terms of gameplay, increased in a similar size to the New Super Mario Bros series. Of course, a difference in visuals would be always a plus and doing away with some of the conventions, such as stomping the boss 3 times to kill it, or some of the visual styles would prove to be interesting.

I find myself agreeing and disagreeing. SMB3 was a big leap forward from the previous games. NSMB was well, not amazing in my own opinion, but I found myself really enjoying the Wii one.
I didn't mind NSMB and NSMB Wii looking pretty much the same graphics-wise (as in style) but it does annoy me that NSMB 2 looks the same, as it just seems a bit lazy. I'm not really a fan of polygons on flat floor either, but that's not too important.

I just know that I'd be more excited for NSMB 2 if it looked different. And with how beautiful Rayman looks I'm a bit disappointed that Nintendo isn't presenting it's 2D games in a nicer fashion (minus Wario, that was nice). Graphics isn't THAT important but it doesn't mean things couldn't look nicer.

Seriously though, I'd love to see some older characters like that getting some recognition. On that not, in a recent interview, Sakurai said something about wanting to revive some more classic characters via the SSB series as he did with Pit, or something along those lines.

Well it WORKED, didn't it? Pit is the prime example of that, with renewed interest and a GOOD game to go along with his revival. Kid Icarus Uprising is one of the best games I've ever played.

Smash brothers has been known to give classic chararcters or japan only characters some recognition.

Look at Fire Emblem as well. Hell if anything I'd love to see joy mech fight and nazo no murasame on there soon.
