If you want real innovation, look up Koopaling boss battles in New Super Mario Bros. U.

NSMB2 literally uses the same exact gimmicks and only changed the arena layout.
(Don't even get me started on the rest of the game, it's an utter piece of recycled bullshit.)

Ugh, I watched the rest of the boss battles I hadn't seen yet and they get progressively worse. I thought it was cool that Wendy called the fish in to be more difficult, but then you see stuff like Morton and it's just sad.

I do like the Wii U bosses they showed so far. At least they are given even more individual styles to the bosses, and so far none even had magic wands.

I think games are as close to canon as we're gonna get. Cartoons or mangas or anything else was probably thought about even less than the games (if possible), there are probably quite a few contradictions, not only with the Bowser family but maybe even with the Mario brothers or Peach.

I've only played one game with the Koopalings and one game with Bowser Jr, all others have only had Bowser. I'm no professional on this, I probably shouldn't have made that tree but I felt like nobody else was going to

it's just a way of adding characters that are related to the base character without having to compromise him/her with a wife/husband. Nothing else to discuss here.

And where does Daisy, Launchpad, and Ludwig fit in? They all have close ties, and are considered family friends (along with Gyro and Ludwig von Drake)!

The way I think is that Bowser just took the koopalings under his wing. I see them as apprentices to the Koopa King rather than actual children. Though perhaps Bowser might consider them "children" depending on how close they are.

There's also the "Which came first, chicken or egg?" debates that are going on. Interesting stuff too.
