Playing all sorts of games

Who remembers The Bouncer for the PS2?

A friend and I are starting an LP channel on YouTube, and I'm having her go through Ocarina of Time.

And the cool thing? As much as she loves video games, she's never played a single Zelda game in her life. This is her first. Big Grin

Currently saving up to finally buy myself a Playsation 4.

In the meantime, I've decided to do a Resident Evil franchise playthrough, because why not. I'm currently about half way through the Resident Evil 1 Remake Remaster and I plan on playing through all 7 main line entries, Zero, Code Veronica, and the Revelations games.

I forgot just how great the Resident Evil 1 Remake is. There really isn't any reason to play the original version anymore aside from nostalgia or the 'magnificent' voice acting. The atmosphere is absolutely amazing due to a combination of beautifully rendered backgrounds, excellent use of angles and lighting, and the unsettling soundtrack. I can't tell you the amount of times the game's made me jump at my character's shadow or reflection in a window.

I too started with Zelda 1 (way back when)! I just thought Link was some hybrid of Peter Pan and Robin Hood--which, thinking about it, I suppose he was in a way. Tongue

playing sonic 3d blast for a bit. it's pretty great, i have zero clue as to why people give it flack. the special stages suck as per every sonic game, but everything else about it is arcade-y and fun.
i actually love the visuals too. this model was a good start for CG Sonic. it amused me when i was younger because it was like a different approach to sonic games. i still appreciate how much it inspired me tbh.

Maybe because it is 85% done by TT. And anyone know that a Sonic game have to be developed by Sonic Team. And this game have just be done to make a game. But all of these clues are baseless, I liked a little this game, that I discovered after reading a review of Retro Gamer.

Ya really wanna know? 'Cause it doesn't play like a Sonic game. And as we all know, that's totally the worst possible crime a Sonic game can commit.

Sarcasm heavily intended. I've actually sat down and played 3D Blast a fair amount myself, and from what I've gathered, most of the complaints about it usually center around either one of these:

1. The Flicky mechanic.

Yeah, the main gimmick of this game made it here. Go figure.
Anyway, the thing about Flickies. You catch five of those (Bash a Badnik to get one) in one area, you get to progress to the next area. Any Flicky you catch will form a line behind Sonic and follow him.
That line can be disrupted at any moment either by a Badnik or stray bullet hitting the Flickies, or taking damage yourself, which scatters the flock. At which point you've got to move to grab 'em back, paying mind that each Flicky has its own attributes in the playfield.

Good luck with the green ones, by the way. Those just futz around wherever they damn well please.

2. Isometric platforming!?

The game itself is an isometric platformer. The less I reprint of all the comments I've seen or heard about this, the better. Trust me on this.

...That being said, can I just go on record and say I never got the hate? Like seriously, whenever I see someone rant about how isometric platformers are oh-so-unplayable or worse-than-beelzeboss or whatever, I'm just rolling my eyes in confusion. Yeah, it's tougher to line your jumps up properly and stuff (D-Pads aren't exactly well-suited for diagonal movement), but it's not outright impossible. This is not the next Dark Souls, people!

Neither were Cuphead or the N. Sane Trilogy*, but that's a whole other can o' worms.

3. SPECIAL ZO-- Wait...

This is a minor one (By comparision, at least), but it should still be addressed. Many people who played this game would argue that the Special Zones here are a joke, and... well, yeah they are.

No prancin' around this one, the Special Zones in 3D Blast are arguably the easiest in the entire series... in the Genesis/MD version, anyway. The Saturn version changes that into a whole different beast, giving us quite possibly the most creative spin on the "half-pipe special stage" formula yet.

Pretty sure others can think of more, but to me, these are the criticisms that stuck out the most. Well, except for "it's not a sanic game" but you can ignore those idiots.

*I should probably note, I have yet to play either one of those games, but manohman I'm already hatin' this stupid nextDarkSouls trend like ya wouldn't believe.

heh, the good ol "NOT A GOOD -insert popular franchise- GAME" argument. i mean it's pretty much the Zelda 2 of the sonic franchise. there are some sucky things, but mostly good things that are often overlooked. also i dunno about the genesis special stages. i found myself having to jump too much to avoid bombs so i ended up with less rings. blegh. maybe i'll give it another go. the game overall is pretty fun and interesting to me so i wanna explore it some more.

when you think about it, SEGA's partnership with TT was pretty well-planned out. they managed to get a couple decent sonic games released for their consoles while project extreme and mars were stuck in development hell.

(YES, IMO Sonic R isn't that bad, geeez. please stay away from me, jontron fanboys)

Oh, compared to other Special Zones up to that point? Most certainly. For the most part, rings are usually set in lines of 8-10 each, and you're bound to get double the requirement for the Emeralds if you play your cards right. Literally, the tougher part is entering the Special Zone itself. There's almost no challenge otherwise.

That's the Genesis/MD version, though. The Saturn version, like I said, swaps that for something bigger and MUCH more challenging.

And hey, no shame in stating what ya like. I myself am partial to some Sonic games the rest of the audience usually just scoffs at. I feel 3D Blast can be a fun experience, just... well, not for everybody. Certainly not for series purists.

Then again, barely anything satisfies those people nowadays. Tch.
