Ripping sprites from screenshot didnt work out so well...

So about 2 days ago, I spent about 4 hours ripping sprites from a psp game. After hours of google research, I came to the conclusion that no one knows how to get into the .bin files the data is likely in. So I decided I would do the old fashioned method of screenshoting and manually assembling them. So after the frustratingly long time I spent ripping them, I was devastated to find out it wasn't what I was aiming for. This is an example of the sprite style I was expecting to find:

These are very blocky, retro-esque sprites. If you zoomed in, you would see that each "Pixel" it seems to be made of is actually a square of 4 pixels, but is otherwise the same as a pixel.

Its quite different. Now I AM playing a remake of the game, so they might have changed the style. Plus I think it's new to the remake (wasn't in the original's data) so it's even more likely to be different. I actually don't know if this was intended, since this isn't from the game data. For all I know it might have been the way the data is read by the psp, or the fact that im using an emulator which might be altering the way the image is displayed. (PPSSPP) I did have the window maximixed, if that helps.

So does anyone have advice? I either need to know if I may have done something wrong while manually ripping them, if there is some way to get into those .bin files, or if theres some sort of image editing feature/tool that could help me out. I really appreciate the help! I am seriously going crazy Sad

That's the problem. You should keep it 1:1

If you could provide a sample file and maybe the game name that would give us more to work with.

Ah, and so it is. I haven't checked the specific sprites, but I looked at one random one before and after changing it, and it worked. Thanks!
I should be able to get them through screenshots now at least.

Well, you can try... not like I'd know anything, I just google stuff. Game is tactics ogre: let us cling together (for PSP). This is from the iso:

This was the largest bin file, and the largest file in general. Came from the insdir file, bin files in all the other folders too... The only non-bins were so small in size it just didn't seem possible. Otherwise, there were 3 pngs of nothing interesting at all.

This RAR contains a tool called pgdecrypt. Running this on the file ("pgdecrypt DATA.BIN" in the command-line) seems to successfully decrypt it.

At that point I'm having issues and right now I don't have the time nor head for trying to figure it out.

Sorry to bother again, but I've run into another issue with screenshots.

In the screens I just took, things are different, but still not quite right. I attached a picture of what I've got now.

Not sure what's wrong, I think I got it at the right size. Here's all the graphic related settings I have (for ppsspp):
Window size: 1x
No postprocessing shaders
Rendering resolution: Auto (It says 1:1 in the menu, the other options say 1x, 2x, 10x, etc)
Rendering mode: Buffered (I couldn't get things to show up in non-buffered)
Frameskipping: Off (Probably not graphics related)
Texture filtering: Auto
Texture scaling: Off (xBRZ) (Deposterize is unchecked)

I've been messing around with the various options, but I haven't gotten it right yet.

EDIT: Forgot these two:
Hardware transform has a check next to it
Vertex cache also has a check
EDIT: Here's even more settings:
Stretch to display, smallscreen, and fullscreen are all unchecked
Vsync is unchecked
Mipmapping is checked
Lazy texture caching, retain changed textures, and low quality splines and Bezier curves are all unchecked
Anisotropic filtering is 16x
And all hack settings are disabled

I've never used this emulator (or emulated PSP at all) but have you tried putting texture filtering to off, if that's possible? Otherwise I don't know what else could cause it.

Oddly enough, there is no option for off. You can choose between auto, nearest, linear, or linear on fmv. I asked on the forums, and apparently there is completely different hardware, so I think i'll try finding a way to screenshot on my actual psp, and then maybe transfer that to my computer. If that doesn't work... I probably have no choice but to try and make them myself Surprise

It doesn't seem to work for me. It just says invalid pgd file.

I think there is a psp emulator that can export the decrypted files, so that might work. I'll see if I can find it.

Aha! Finally! I modified my psp to take screenshots, I got the screenshots, and they look perfect. I never thought i'd see the day...
