You know, there's a trick I saw at MFZ that might make this easier for some animations like walking. You blow up an existing sprite (i.e. Metroid Zero Mission) and pixel over it to smooth it up. Kind of cheating, but it could work.

And not all characters have to be 3/4 view. I think characters with cannons facing forward need to be facing forward too.

They're significantly easier to sprite. Samus is hard.

not really, her design is more complex but her animation will be a lot more static while M&L will need to be bouncier and more energetic.
