Sound Effects

This would give me somewhere to host my Rockman X4 sfx rips, lul

but yeah, I'm only worried on bandwidth issues.

I think it would be a pretty good idea.

Hmmm.... I'm kinda neutral on this:

First the against; the bandwidth issues have been mentioned especially considering that wavs are high in file size (there's mp3s but they are compressed, maybe FLAC or OGG or something), there are other sprite places that offer this (SDB) and may lose focus on the site unless it is a subsidery (say there are 300 sfx submissions and 50 sprites on an update).

However there are advantages such as a place that offers quality sfx, a high user base and maybe an opportunity for the site to expand. Yeah, I know most of this has already been covered.

I have sound ripped from games before (did a couple of VGMs on SMS Power), so if this goes ahead I can happily rip from Master System/Game Gear games using MEKA or Kega Fusion for Genesis since that has the most accurate sound. Whether format they will be in depends on the final say.

I like the idea. I always have trouble finding the right sfx for flash videos using sprites.

haha nah i'm just being a douche

But yeah, if you're having a hard enough time paying for tSR as it is, don't add sound effects. You don't want to end up in the shitter because you decided to add something else like such. Hosting sfx will definitely shoot up the bandwidth consumption.

Adding sound effects probably won't cause any issues in terms of server usage. The problem we had with server issues was the number of connections we had calling on our crappy code. The code's been fixed and we can use the same system for sounds but on a subdomain, with a blue colour theme rather than red, and it could be alright.
Of course I'd discuss it with my tech wizard server guys, but I don't see it being much strain on the server. We've hosted bigger things for download on the server before, and heck, we still do have some large files on here. 12mb sheets and the like.

I seriously believe this site should stay dedicated to sprite sheets; venturing into other stuff wouldn't be worth it in the long run.

Again, I'm gonna echo what's been said:

Perhaps a poll would be the best way to solve this. But it shouldn't just be any poll. I suggest a poll ONLY FOR THE SITE STAFF, and all that that implies. Dazz, RTB, Grooveman, and all the other site moderators and admins. Only once the Staff feels it's okay, then you could open a poll to let anyone else give their opinion on the subject.

Or vice versa. Whatever.

Music? Hmmm... No. This actually can give some headache, specially if the composer(s) is/are too paranoid with legal jumbo. I've seen fansites featuring soundtracks of one specific game having some major legal problems and having to end up removing it.
Sound rips I guess it's OK. Specially as many games use creative commons or free sounds. Not much a fan of the idea but it could be a nice addition to the site, as long the main focus still the sprites. In my experience to rip the effects you usually need an extractor, and it can be a pain in the side.

I would never host music. That is usually provided on CD and sold in stores, so to host that would be piracy, however sounds are never published.

If you guys worked on collecting the sounds for awhile, organizing and whatnot, you could make a sister site. Good luck thinking of a catchy name though, "sounders-resource" doesn't do it for me.

Sounds at The Spriters Resource...? It'd just be a subdomain. Screw paying for a second domain name.

That should be tSR's April Fool's gag next year. <.<

EDIT - If the sound effects plan really happens, the sub-site could be called "The Sound Range". ...Yeah, I got nothing better. Defeated
