If you are planning on trying out the series, I do feel the need to mention that Persona 1 and 2 are fairly traditional JRPGs, and I would argue Persona 1 isn't even a very good one. 2 is great though.

3, 4, and 5 are where the franchise really got its identity as both a competent RPG as well as an excellent social simulator of sorts.
If I were you, I'd most likely start with 3, 4, or 5 and then go backwards if you're interested. The games all have separate stories so you don't need to worry about that. There are some nods and references to previous titles, but that's about it.

Imo I would play 3 if you want the best overall story.

Play 4 if you want the most likeable and interesting characters.

5 is a little too new for me to say, but at the very least, it seems like a very good starting point for newcomers with the most refined and user friendly menus, mechanics, gameplay, etc.

oh before i rant i should probly point out you're not missing out on much by skipping persona 1. it has such a terrible localization to the point where um. this happens.

masao became mark. this should speak volumes.

atlus also moved the setting from japan to america, which...also makes things odd. subsequent ones have been set in japan

i've actually done everything i could to stay away from the persona series up till now. there's just so much crazy fanservice they've put out for it and i feel like the only thing it had going for it, really was it was edgy. and somehow, a lot of You Kids could identify with it like 8 years ago

like, i just couldn't get into persona 4 because over time the game just felt like i was following scooby doo and his gang into their adventures into the television and despite it tackling some legitimately good, serious issues, the game as a whole just felt kinda childish. as a result i usually call it "scooby weeaboo". one thing i appreciate about P3 & 4 though is its really great character design and artwork.
truth be told after i finish P5 i'll probably revisit 4 with a little more respect. but basically goemar what i'm saying is that i don't blame you if you skip them lol.

this new one is actually pretty dang cool and it oozes aesthetic - that and it brings a lot of mechanics back from earlier Persona games and SMT; what with guns making a return and the demon negotiation system. the game still has its goofy edginess (you're a delinquent from a small town moving to tokyo, and nobody ever has anything good to say about you)

but i mean there are three good things about this game that i really need to emphasize:

1) you and your anime friends are pulling off some pretty great heists. i've always wanted to pull off a crazy heist and now i can do it. thank you anime heist simulator 2017
2) you can go on dates with the womens. you dont need a 3d woman ever again when you have futaba sakura who will indulge all your fantasies with her talking nerdy to you
3) please look at morgana's running animation. he has little sonic spiral legs when he runs and it is so pure. please buy sonic legs and aesthetic heist simulator 2017. please buy it.

but if you're gonna play another one, go ahead - they're like Zelda or Final Fantasy where they aren't really connected. the only thing is that if you're a Big Fan of the series you'll get little sneaky references thrown in (i haven't come across a single one)

I actually just noticed one in Persona 5 yesterday. There are some advertisements in Shibuya with the child star character Rise from Persona 4.

Other than that, I definitely see where you're coming from with the series, and think this is a great explanation from someone that hasn't really been a fan of the series.

The few hurdles I would say you need to cross to really enjoy these games are:
Do you like anime?
Are you fine with lots of dialogue?
Are you willing to or able to devote 80-100 hours of your time?
Do you like grinding and repetitive rpg gameplay?(doesn't apply to 5 as much)
Do you enjoy getting to know made up video game characters?

If you can get by most of these, then you should be good. For me personally, I not only deal with these aspects, but quite enjoy them, so it's a good game for me.

I bought Persona 5. I spent 13 hours getting to the first boss and all of my doubts have been wiped away. This game is BEAUTIFUL

Kinda hilarious how it runs better in handheld mode than when it's docked. Besides that though I'm kinda sold on the Switch's potential now, I just hope it gets games

Finished Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight. Got the true ending (somehow - like how do you get the 'bad' ending?)

I really really liked it.

Picked up Assualt Android Cactus and also borrowed Titanfall 2 off a friend (for the campaign, not fussed about online).

that's the original game, but a new and improved edition (full color, up to 4 players and over 10 different modes of play) is in development and the beta comes out for PC/Mac in a little over a week! do check it out cuz it's really well-made (by a three-person team!!!) and super addicting!

Had a quick go - 39,000 something.

Seems like a cool Tetris variant - not so sure about the whole being able to 'stick' blocks together with the sides instead of them having to fall mind :/

it took me at least 20 or more tries to get used to the mechanics. it's not as simple as bombliss for sure.

i found the best strategy to be removing the ground under blocks in order to let them fall to the bottom - works best if you have too many pieces floating towards the top
